Glenwood Springs has been a wellness destination since the first Ute Indian dipped her toe in the healing hot springs. In fact, the tribe made yearly pilgrimages here for R&R (hunting too). Since then, spas have become an inseparable part of Glenwood’s identity. In this series of posts, look for noteworthy spa experiences – you know, the ones that keep you coming back for more.
Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves
The caves. The Vapor Caves are a rare and truly distinctive attraction. In these naturally-occurring caves, hot mineral water flows through channels at 125°F creating a geothermal steam bath. Visitors descend a flight of stairs to enter the underground caverns which are softly lit. The caverns, all lined with white marble benches, invite visitors to recline and relax. Locals claim inhaling the mineral-rich steam has the uncanny ability to ward off impending colds and other minor illnesses. The Utes believed this too and used the caves to purify body and mind. When you need a break from the heat, douse yourself with cold water, relax in the upstairs serenity room, or even sit outdoors.
The spa. The Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves is a full-service Aveda salon. Spa services include massage, facials, body treatments, oxygen treatments, mud baths and private natural mineral baths.
Try this. Definitely check out the Yampah Spa’s monthly special. It typically combines a massage, body treatment and all-day access to the Vapor Caves.
