Proper Eyebrow Care

Eyebrow styles change over time, just as clothing and hairstyles do. Fads come and go, for example, brows plucked to near nothingness, or allowed to grow into dense thickets. A simple, nicely shaped arc, however, never goes out of vogue. Here’s how to pluck, care for, and maintain an attractive eyebrow look no matter what the style-of-the-day may be.

Condition Your Eyebrows

It’s easy to overlook your eyebrows, but it’s just as important to care for them as you do your hair and eyelashes. Brows frame the eyes and can make them appear glamorous. Eyebrow hair needs conditioning, just like the hair on your head.

Choose an eyebrow conditioner that is formulated for that specific use, as it is unsafe to use products that are not approved by dermatologists or ophthalmologists near your eyes. Condition once a day for the best results. A quality conditioner helps strengthen eyebrow hairs and defend against the elements, leaving your eyebrows soft, luscious, and manageable.

Shape Your Eyebrows

Shaping eyebrows is a simple process of identifying the natural shape of your brow's arch, and plucking away stray hairs that fall outside this zone.

  • First, identify the inner and outer end points of your eyebrows using your tweezers as a guide. Lay the tweezers vertically beside your nose, with the open end pointing downward, lying just beside the outside of the bottom of your nose. Use an eye pencil to mark the point where the top of the tweezers intersects your eyebrow. Repeat on the other side of your face and pluck away hairs that fall between these marks, using care to keep the bridge of your nose in the center of the plucked area.
  • Now find the outer end of your brow line. Lay the tweezers at an angle from the bottom outside of your nose to the corner of your eye. Use an eye pencil to mark the place where the tweezers intersect your eyebrow. Do this again on the other side, and then pluck away hairs that fall outside these zones.
  • Next, adjust the thickness of your eyebrows, which should measure one-quarter to one-half inch when you finish. Find the fullest part of your eyebrows, and make an arch-shaped line along the bottom, following the natural arch of your eyebrows. Pluck away the hairs below this line.
  • Lastly, shape and define your eyebrow's arch. Look straight into your mirror and find the point at which the arch peaks, which should be just outside the rim of the brow bone. Mark this spot with an eye pencil, and pluck away the row below this point. Then shape the brow along the arch, working from the inside near your nose to the outside. Shape the eyebrow to thin and taper at the outer edge.

Some women find it difficult to shape their own eyebrows, and this is okay. If you invest once in a professional shaping, it's easy to pluck stray hairs afterward to keep the brows in shape.

Style Your Eyebrows

Once your eyebrows are neat and shapely, they'll be easier to manage. Style your brows after your other makeup is in place. Brush them into place using an eyebrow brush. If unruly hairs don't want to cooperate, spray a small amount of hairspray onto the eyebrow brush and smooth the hairs into place. Don't spray hairspray directly onto your brows, as it can damage your eyes! If you use eyebrow conditioner regularly, these unruly hairs should easily fall into place.

Maintain Your Eyebrows

Whether you pluck your own brows or have them done professionally, it's easy to maintain the nice shape once they're properly plucked. Simply keep a pair of tweezers handy near the bathroom mirror and pluck stray hairs as they appear. Alternately, you can wax your brows, as long as you keep them well conditioned to prevent dryness and breakage.
