SAN FRANCISCO (September 10, 2015) – SAG-AFTRA’s LGBT Actors Committee National co-chair, Actor and Comedian Jason Stuart is being honored with the 2015 Jose Julio Sarria International Civil Rights Award. (www.impcourt.org/recognition/international-jose-julio-sarria-civil-rights-award)
The award will be presented by the International Imperial Court System (IICS) during the next engagement of the LGBTs In The News panel series on Thursday, September 24th in San Francisco. The event will be held at the San Francisco LGBT Center in the Rainbow Room. (www.sfcenter.org)
Stuart openly ‘came out’ in show business 22 years ago. Upon recently being invited as a panelist to the San Francisco engagement, IICS's top official Nicole Murray Ramirez, learned that Stuart and SAG-AFTRA have been an ongoing advocate of LGBTs In The News. Ramirez and IICS decided to use the event as an opportunity to recognize Stuart's work on behalf of LGBT professionals working in, and seeking work in, the entertainment and media spheres; more specifically, for the openly gay actor and performer in Hollywood for the last 9 years. Stuart created the committee with SAG-AFTRA’s Duncan Crabtree Ireland and the committee is now co-chaired by actress Traci Godfrey.
Presentation of the Jose Julio Sarria International Civil Rights Award to Jason Stuart and SAG-AFTRA will precede the panel discussion. His fellow panelists will include: Dr. Betty Sullivan (publisher of The Bay Times) Bay Area Reporter columnist and editor, Mathew Bajko, Nicole Murray Ramirez (LGBT Weekly columnist, IICS top official and San Diego City Commissioner), as well as the legendary AIDS Memorial Quilt founder, Cleve Jones.
This engagement's discussion is themed "History in Mind, Future in Sight" and will feature a lively discussion about how the LGBT-equality movement's history informs their continuing struggle for equality. Additionally, they will focus on how the younger generation of LGBT activists and journalists can learn from mistakes of the past, while building on victories won by those who went before them.
Comedian Jason Stuart is currently headlining the TROPICANA HOTELS, LAUGH FACTORY in Las Vegas. Next up for this busy actor is the role of British journalist ‘Mr. Wills’ in the comedy parody film HUSH UP SWEET CHARLOTTE? The film opens on October 28th at the historic Castro Theatre in San Francisco and stars Varla Jean Merman, Matthew Martin, David Millbern and Mike Stole. Stuart was also recently seen in the hit Sundance film TANGERINE, shot entirely on the iPhone 5, SLEEPY HOLLOW on FOX TV and his award winning web-series MENTOR with Alexandra Paul & Paul Elia.
Stuart is often asked, “If you break the ground, do you get to walk on it?” With his upcoming role in THE BIRTH OF A NATION, as straight plantation owner ‘Joseph Randall’, we believe that yes, the times are a changing for this prolific character actor. The movie is written and directed by NATE PARKER, who stars as slave-revolt leader “Nat Turner”. The film also stars Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earl Haley, Aja Naomi King, Colman Domingo, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Gabrielle Union.
