January 21, 2015 (Tampa, FL) – Metropolitan Ministries’ announces today that its expansion, MiraclePlace® has been awarded LEED® Gold certification. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. Committed to sustainable practices, the build team of FleischmanGarcia Architects, The Beck Group, and REAL Building Consultants helped Metropolitan Ministries achieve LEED Gold Certification for Phase One. This means the project has a lower impact on the environment and the design and building materials create a healthier place to live for residents.
“Metropolitan Ministries’ is close to our hearts. It isn’t just a building – it is a brighter future for many homeless and needy families. Not only can the Ministries’ accommodate more families, their accommodations are environmentally friendly. Our team has already seen the great impact made from the first phase of the project; knowing that we are helping to make a difference both in our community and for the environment excites us even more about this next phase of the project,” said Ryan Toth, Regional Director at The Beck Group in Tampa.
Metropolitan Ministries’ MiraclePlace® provides a vital community for homeless families to receive help, hope and support while they get back on their feet. While some of these families simply need assistance in finding affordable housing solutions, many need intensive counseling to overcome the trauma associated with homelessness. MiraclePlace is about the promise of a better life and restoring hope. It is a critical response to the crisis of family homelessness. Now, 100 families and 250 children have a safe and healthy home base as they work toward self-sufficiency.
“FleischmanGarcia Architecture is committed to being green. Innovation in planning is key to a successful building. Metropolitan Ministries’ facilities are more than just technical space, they are very human environments that have been designed to enhance communication, collaboration, multidisciplinary activities and the general well-being and dignity of their clients,” added Stan Loper, Executive Vice President, FleischmanGarcia Architects.
Metropolitan Ministries achieved LEED Gold certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development with native, drought-tolerant plants and landscaping, water savings through low-flow plumbing fixtures, energy and atmosphere with high efficiency HVAC systems and light fixtures, occupancy sensor lighting controls and solar panels, materials selection with low VOC paints, carpet, adhesives and other materials, regionally sources materials and recycled materials, indoor environmental quality by utilizing indoor/outdoor air balancing, multiple points of end-user temperature control and abundant use of natural light.
"The REAL team is very proud of this high achievement for Metropolitan Ministries. As longtime supporters of this important organization our team jumped at the chance to provide our comprehensive building consulting services--including Energy Efficiency Modeling, LEED Consulting and Building Commissioning--to ensure that Metropolitan Ministries will benefit from reduced operating costs for the organization, increased building comfort for its clients, and environmentally friendly practices for its mission. Not only does this LEED Gold certification signify that they are leading the way compared to projects throughout the country, it exemplifies a deep commitment to a sustainable future for Tampa Bay,” said Taylor Ralph of REAL Building Consultants.
Efficiency strategies employed in MirclePlace make it over 35% more efficient than a comparable baseline building. In addition to efficient building systems, a 30 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array was installed as part of the project which has generated over $3,000 in electricity over the past year. The building's low-flow fixtures help reduce water use by over 45% in addition to helping reduce energy use. The Ministries will save as much as $80,000 annually in water and power costs.
“The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges or our time, including global climate change, dependence on un-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The work of innovative building projects such as Metropolitan Ministries’ MiraclePlace is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.”
LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. Over 61,800 projects are currently participating in the commercial LEED rating systems, comprising over 11.4 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 150 countries.
