The Wilderness Society Enlists Backbone Media for Public-Lands Defense Effort

Backbone Media helps deploy innovative social campaign to prevent public-lands takeover.

Washington, DC (July 29, 2016) – The Wilderness Society, one of the nation’s leading conservation organizations, has enlisted Backbone Media to manage tactical promotion of Our Wild, a movement to protect and preserve access to the 670 million acres of public wildlands in America.

These lands, which include national parks, forests, deserts and wildlife refuges, are owned by all Americans and federally managed for an array of uses, including recreation. Unfortunately, American public lands are under grave threat from profit-minded state seizure and unpredictable future management, which could very well include exploitation for commercial gain, irreparable damage to fragile and vital ecosystems, and prohibition of public access.

“These wildlands are uniquely American,” says Lulu Gephart, senior marketing director for The Wilderness Society. “Yet private interests and their allies in government are actively and quietly pushing unpopular plans to transfer and sell them—essentially to steal them from the American people. The Wilderness Society is fighting to raise awareness of this threat and inspire the public to fight for protection of these sensitive places.”

Our Wild includes a video series that tells personal stories about the value public wildlands bring to the daily lives of ordinary Americans, a social post generator, a website to educate people and inspire action, and action steps for contacting representatives. The trending #OurWild tag is gaining momentum on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
