Defoamers are specialty chemicals used in various industries such as pulp and paper, oil & gas, textiles, pharmaceuticals, detergents, lubricants, food & beverage and others to control foam generated during the production process. Usually it is very difficult to break down the foam and is stabilized by the surface elasticity and surface viscosity of the film. Defoamers help in maximizing the efficiency of the process along with its basic function to eliminate foam from the foaming media.
Pulp & paper is the major end user industry for defoamers followed by oil & gas. These two applications itself capture more than 50% of the market. They also however play a critical role in consumer laundry applications. For example, silicone antifoams are used in detergents as a foam control agent; but it is important to stabilize the foam as its complete elimination can be perceived as detergent is unable to produce enough foam. The dosage rate of defoamer in detergent applications typically ranges from 0.2% to 0.5% of the detergent weight, depending primarily on the end product being a liquid detergent or gel detergent and so on.
Excess foam results in excess usage of water for washing; hence they are recognized as cost-effective solution in laundry applications. Strict regulations have been enforced globally on the use of defoamers containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as defoamers with high VOC content are deleterious to human health as well as the environment. Although a few companies have started manufacturing VOC free defoamer products but still it poses a challenge to industry.

Top 5 Market Players arranged in descending order based on their ranks:
- The Dow Chemical Company
- Air Products & Chemicals
- Bluestar Silicones
- Evonik Group
- Kemira Oyj
The most preferred strategy of the above five companies are Product launches and Expansion. Dow Chemical manufactures most of the silicone defoamers globally and is present in 180 countries with major suppliers and distributors vertically integrated. The market and the key players have been displaying various growth strategies over the past few years to gain market share in their respective regions and application industries. Air Products & Chemicals launched 9 new products between 2011 and 2015. Bluestar Silicones opened a new plant in South Carolina and new R&D facility in Seoul for specialty chemicals in 2014, where defoamers are part of this segment. Evonik Industries is planning to expand in 2015 in Specialty silicones segment in Germany and China to meet the growing demand from industries such as textiles, coating, etc. Kemira is one of the major pulp and paper and oil & gas defoamer manufacturers in the U.S.

Top Regions and Countries for this market Include:
- North America: U.S., Canada, Mexico
U.S. has the major market share that accounts for 72.5% of the North American market.
- Europe: Germany, U.K., France, Russian Federation and Others
Germany accounts for 36% of the total European market followed by U.K, France, Russian Federation and others. Germany has majority of defoamer market for food and beverage applications as it has the highest production of beer and non-alcoholic beverages.
- APAC: China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Others
China ranks first in the production of pulp and paper industry in APAC and holds majority of defoamer share as a whole. India is an emerging market for defoamer in APAC as cement and paints industry is burgeoning rapidly due to huge demands in the construction sector for the period 2015-2020.
- ROW: Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Others
Brazil is the major producer of defoamer in ROW followed by South Africa, Saudi Arabia and others. There is an increase in oil production in ROW; hence the demand for defoamers in oil and gas has immense scope.
Regulations for defoamers vary by region and country and are imposed both while production and consumption of the product. The institutional bodies which control the emission of toxic elements in the defoamers by their regulatory framework are: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the U.S. Gulf Coast/ Gulf of Mexico and the Oslo/Paris Commission (OSPARCOM) for North Sea and other European Countries. The OSPAR commission is very stringent in terms of the risk posed to the environment. The U.K. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) regulation is for safe use of food defoamers in potato washing.
Pulp and Paper Mill defoamer and Wood Chip Regulations issued under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) govern the use of defoamers containing dibenzo-para-dioxin or dibenzofuran in pulp and paper mills. There are few other regulatory standards for defoamers such as the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), National Science Foundation, Kosher, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These regulatory standards are the benchmark for safe use of defoamers for all the applicable industries.
