Fish & Richardson Principal Jonathan Singer Named “2013 Life Sciences MVP” by Law360

Minneapolis, MN, January 15, 2014 – Fish & Richardson today announced that Jonathan Singer, head of the firm’s Life Sciences Practice, was named a “2013 Life Sciences MVP” by Law360.  Singer was one of only five attorneys selected for the “Life Sciences MVP” award, which honors the top players in the legal industry for their exceptional work.

According to Law360, Singer had “several high-profile triumphs” in 2013, including “a major Federal Circuit victory” that ultimately preserved client Cephalon, Eurand, and Anesta AG’s $140-million-per-year market for their AMRIX product for skeletal muscle pain until the last patent expires in 2024.  Singer convinced the Federal Circuit to find the patents valid in an important ruling that clarifies parties’ respective burdens of proof when a defendant seeks to invalidate a patent.  This is an issue that comes up in almost every pharmaceutical litigation under the Hatch-Waxman Act, and that has now finally been resolved in branded pharmaceutical’s favor.  Law360 added that Singer “cemented his win when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the appellate court's ruling.”

Singer went on to win an important bench trial for Cephalon, thereby protecting their $120 million-per-year market for the pain medication Fentora until the last patent expires in 2024.  He also won major cases for Allergan’s multi-million dollar ophthalmic pharmaceuticals products.

Singer received his J.D., with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School (1992) and his A.B. in chemistry from Dartmouth College (1986).
