Oom-Pah-Pah: Oktoberfest in Glenwood Springs

Lederhosen and dirndl dresses are optional, but heading to Glenwood Springs for the annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 27 is not! Raise a stein of beer to the centuries-old tradition that originally celebrated the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Therese von Saxe-Hildburghausen in Munich, Germany on October 12, 1810, and has since become Glenwood Springs’ signature fall fun-festival.

Glenwood’s Downtown Market gets the party started at Centennial Park, located at Ninth and Grand, from noon to 7 p.m. The entertainment lineup includes a mix of contemporary and authentic German “oom-pah-pah” music. So when you hear those polkas and waltz numbers grab a partner and channel your inner Bavarian!

Count on Glenwood’s Oktoberfest to serve up your favorite German fare including wurst mit sauerkraut, pretzels, pastries and more. Local artisans will be selling all sorts of wares in the park, including souvenir Oktoberfest beer steins.

And of course there will be beer. Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company, a sponsor of the event, will be tapping their Barrel Rolls Oktoberfest beer on Thursday, Sept. 25 and serving it throughout the festivities on Saturday, Sept. 27. Head Brewer Chip Holland selected a mix of Pilsner and Munich malts to create a lager that features moderately toasted malt aromas and a very subtle noble hop character. Prosit to that!

In addition to sampling this beer at the park, try it with dinner at Glenwood Canyon Brewpub. Chef, Jason Barnicoat has prepared an Oktoberfest menu featuring German specialties that pair particularly well with the Barrel Rolls Oktoberfest.
