Native Detroit Siblings Aim To Shine the Spotlight on Local Actors

Detroit, MI, October 23, 2014: As they prepare for the Nov 14th opening of the Stephen A. Guirgis play The Motherfucker With The Hat [The Motherf**ker With The Hat] 4TheatrSake’s brother/sister founders Sean Rodriguez Sharpe & Sherina Rodriguez Sharpe realize that creating thought provoking art in Detroit might be the most rewarding experience of all. As Downtown Detroit is growing rapidly and filling with new residents, 4TheatrSake aims to facilitate a new type of theater specific to the New Detroit experience. This pop-up production takes place on the terrace level of the Downtown Doubletree Fort Shelby Hotel and is the first of its kind in Detroit. Creative Director Sean Rodriguez explains: “We want to create performance art that highlights our local talent in the places where people live/work/play as a first step towards blurring the traditional line between artist and spectator. This is how our ancestor’s originally intended the role of theater: Bringing humans together for shared dramatic experiences that enrich our lives.”

Although the title of the play denotes an experience that is not for the faint of heart, The Motherfucker With The Hat was nominated in 2011 for 6 Tony Awards including best play. The plot follows recovering addict Jackie, fresh out of jail, and determined to get straight and settle down with the support of his girl Veronica, his AA sponsor Ralph D, and his loyal cousin Julio until… he finds “a man hat that ain’t my hat” in his bedroom. His quest to track down “the [man] with the hat” threatens to put him right back where he started. This 95 minute edgy comedy is a rollercoaster ride of love, addiction, loyalty and acceptance. Local legendary theatre artist Carla Milarch remarks: “Sean Rodriguez Sharpe and 4TheatreSake are ones to watch, in my opinion. Their production aesthetic and casting are fresh, edgy and right on target with this play's gut. If you want an invigorating night of theatre - this is one to see."
