HENDERSON, NV – Offering nutrition and dietary tips, the Roseman University Accelerated Nursing Program is celebrating National Nutrition Month by helping individuals and families lead healthier lifestyles.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese. With the estimated annual national healthcare cost for obesity-related illnesses at $190.2 billion, individuals are suffering from numerous preventable health problems, including heart disease, type two diabetes, asthma and sleep apnea. Throughout the month of March and the rest of the year, those looking to become more health-conscious can shake up their diet by making nutritious changes to live happier and healthier lives.
The following tips can help individuals make healthier food choices and enjoy a better quality life:
- Go Au Naturel
Focus on foods that come from the earth including fruits, vegetables, beans and lean sources of meat. Most natural food sources are low in fat, sodium and calories, as well as provide vital nutrients such as potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C and folic acid.
- Sip to Success
Beverages that contain added sugar usually provide more calories than needed and offer little or no nutrients. By drinking more water and avoiding sodas, energy drinks and other sweet beverages, individuals can boost energy levels, speed up metabolism and manage calorie intake.
- Too Much of a Good Thing
A key foundation for starting and maintaining a healthier lifestyle is moderation. Everyone needs a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals to sustain a healthy, functioning body. This means eating less sugary, fatty or unhealthy items and more nutritious foods. Individuals should also try to eat smaller portions and be mindful of serving sizes.
- No Grain, No Gain
Contrary to most fad diets, carbohydrate and fiber sources, especially whole grains, are an important dietary need. For a more nutritious option, substitute refined-grain products with whole grain items. In addition to providing lasting energy, whole grains help to protect against coronary heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes.
- Get Off the Couch
A nutritious diet is only half of the equation for a healthy lifestyle, the other half being physical activity. Adult men and women should include at least two and a half hours of physical exercise in their weekly schedule. Depending on one’s preference, activities like running, biking, swimming or even just taking the stairs more often are all good ways to work up a sweat and get the heart pumping.
