CPH Donates Resources to Kansas Family

Saint Louis, MO—Concordia Publishing House recently reached out to a young boy and his family after learning they were required by their local city council to remove a free lending library from the front yard of their home.

According to news reports, nine-year-old Spencer and his father, Brian Collins, constructed, painted, and set up a Little Free Library in their yard as a special gift for the boy’s mother, who is an elementary school teacher. The goal of a Little Free Library is to promote literacy and access to reading. It’s an initiative his mother supports. News accounts state that she had told her husband and son a few months before Mother’s Day that she would like one of these libraries in their front yard. The family of avid readers wanted to share their love of reading with others in their neighborhood.

Only one week after the structure was put up, the city of Leawood, Kansas, made the family take it down because it did not comply with a city ordinance that prohibits structures from standing in front yards of single-family homes.

“When we heard about this, we wanted to do something special for Spencer,” said Loren Pawlitz, director of eCommerce and Communications at CPH.

CPH gathered a collection of children’s and activity books, and is shipping them to the family. The books included CPH’s two most recently released books from its Arch® Books collection, Best-Loved Parables of Jesus and Best-Loved Christmas Stories, as well as Icky Sticky, Hairy Scary Bible Stories and more. Since Spencer’s mom’s gift had to be taken down, CPH slipped into the care package a special gift of inspiration for her—Godly Moms: Strength from the Inside Out by Lenore Buth.

“What a natural opportunity to share the gift of the written word and the Word of God,” Pawlitz said, adding he hoped the family would enjoy the resources and have the opportunity to share them with others.
