METdance is remembering its roots - and paying tribute to the artists who have helped them captivate and educate Houston for two decades with "Honored Guests," the next concert in its 2015-2016 performance season. The show is slated for 8 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at the Wortham Center, Cullen Theatre, 510 Texas Ave. in Houston, 77002. Tickets range from $15 to $45 per person.
"This performance celebrates those brilliant artists whose contributions have left a lasting impact on METdance's diverse repertory," artistic director Marlana Doyle said. "We are showcasing a wide range of performances both past and present."
"Honored Guests" will include a world premier by Katarzyna Skarpetowska, a frequent METdance guest artist based in New York. The piece 'Snow Playground' is an abstract work, which takes its inspiration from a peaceful image of swirling snow in a gentle wind as it moves across the surface of a children's playground.
"At times it gathers speed and brings in more of itself into the fold; at other times it settles in repose just to be picked up again soon after by another gust in a different cluster," Skarpetowska said. "Similarly, the dancers form and break relationships, rearranging themselves into various groupings as they coil, swivel and surge in this relentless pursuit."
She describes the work as both mesmerizing and meditative.
The show will also include a reprise of "ForeverFleeting" by METdance associate director and past resident choreographer Joe Celej, as well as a performance of "Semi Detached" by past resident choreographer Kiki Lucas and of "Strange Humors," choreographed by Robert Battle, artist director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
There will be a special homage to METdance's "Jazzman," the late Steven Boyd, as well as a collaborative piece by artists Jhon Stronks and Ben Doyle.
