EUGENE, Ore.—Last Thursday, Ninkasi Brewing Company accepted a 2015 Good Food Award at a gala reception held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Calif. Joined by food and beverage crafters from across the country, the ceremony celebrated socially-conscious food producers for their commitment to authentic and responsible food.
Among the 14 winners in the beer category, Ninkasi was recognized for its Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout, an oatmeal stout fermented on whole Madagascar vanilla beans supplied by local Eugene vanilla distributor, Singing Dog Vanilla.
Organized by Seedling Projects, culinary luminaries Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl and Nell Newman honored the 2015 winners onstage. The event featured opening remarks from writer and activist Mark Bittman and was emceed by Bi-Rite’s Sam Mogannam. Established in 2009, this year’s Good Food Awards received 1,462 entries. The awards honored the 146 medalist including crafters in the 11 categories of beer, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, coffee, confections, honey, oils, pickles, preserves, and spirits.
“It was not easy to make it onto this list,” says Sarah Weiner, co-founder and Executive Director of Seedling Projects. “The quality of entries increases every year, and even amongst the highest scoring, nearly two dozen entries didn’t quite meet the high bar we set for sustainability.”
In a blind tasting held last September, a distinguished panel of 13 sampled and scored each of this year’s beer entries. Paired with an in-depth questionnaire investigating the sustainability efforts of each brewery – ranging from the ingredients used to the relationships with its consumers, suppliers and community—Ninkasi received the award for its commitment to sustainability and its strides towards creating a better community throughout all states where its beer is sold.
From sourcing local ingredients, to upcycling, recycling, increasing energy efficiencies, and giving back to all the communities where it operates, Ninkasi strives to continually make choices that benefit its community and lessen its environmental impact. In 2014, Ninkasi completed a three-part expansion in Eugene to include a second production facility, admin building and local distribution facility, all designed to reach Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certifications.
