Metallic Flooring System Beats Limitations of Acid Stains at Home Remodel

The following project profile features Arizona Polymer Flooring's ColorChrome Metallic Flooring System.

Challenge:

Homeowners in Anthem, Arizona wanted a unique and decorative look throughout the common areas of their home, including the living room, kitchen and dining room. They originally opted for an acid stain, but once the tile and carpet were removed, the contractor discovered too many cracks and holes that the acid stain could not hide. 

Contractor:

Founded in 2006, Arizona-based Sensational Fabrications specializes in installing decorative concrete coatings, simulated flagstone, pavers, Italian slate, pool decks and all types of epoxy and polyurethane coatings for residential projects.

Solution:

To create the desired look while still hiding imperfections in the concrete, Sensational Fabrications selected APF’s ColorChrome™ Metallic Flooring System, which uses a metallic mica pigment that can be dispersed in a variety of binders to create seamless floors with a unique, three-dimensional appearance. Depending on the application techniques used, the finished floor’s appearance can range from elegant to exotic, making it highly versatile for a wide range of residential and commercial interiors.

Using a combination of two metallic colors, Burnt Umber and Coffee, as well as a satin finish as opposed to a gloss finish – Sensational Fabrications was able to achieve aesthetics similar to an acid stain system.  This system consists of the following:

  • Primer: Epoxy 100 (with metallic powder) – Epoxy 100 is a two-component, water-based epoxy system that’s easy to apply and has a very low odor. It cures blush free over a wide range of temperatures and adheres tenaciously to a variety of substrates.

  • Base Resin: Epoxy 400 (with metallic powder) – Epoxy 400 is a low viscosity, 100% solids resin system used in a wide variety of flooring applications. It cures blush-free and provides an outstanding balance of physical strength, flexibility and chemical resistance.

  • Topcoat: Polyurethane 501– Polyurethane 501 is a high solids, two component, water-based aliphatic polyurethane. This unique material provides performance properties equal to conventional solvent-based catalyzed urethanes without the associated health and environmental problems.Poly 501 has a good gloss, is easy to clean, and has superior abrasion resistance.
