A Whole New Flat: DJ Sun shakes things up at Montrose mainstay

The Flat of 2015 is not the same hang-out it used to be. The music venue and lounge tucked into the heart of Montrose is experiencing a renaissance of sorts – thanks to new managing partner DJ Sun.

Before taking over, DJ Sun, whose off-stage name is Andre Sam-Sin, was a regularly scheduled performer at the Flat. “I have been involved from the day it opened,” he said. “The acoustics, the lay-out, the laid-back energy attracted me to the Flat. It was a hidden gem in the neighborhood."

Now with new leadership, the Flat is becoming a more popular hotspot – a destination for music lovers, foodies and cocktail connoisseurs.

DJ Sun explained that he fashioned the Flat after the same concept sustained by Thievery Corporation, a DJ collaborative based in Washington D.C., who have a “home” at Eighteenth Street Lounge, a space where they can do special shows and hang out during down time.

DJ Sun has spent the last year breathing new life into the Flat. “The Flat had been in business for eight years when I came in to operate it and was in need of some changes,” he said. “While retaining the Mid-Century design concept, we needed to update the look and add additional furniture, lighting, and patio structures including an outside bar.”

The interior space has been reorganized, and projectors were installed to show movies and to provide other visual effects. The façade was renovated and additional landscaping added. An exterior mural was painted by renowned Houston artist Daniel Anguilu.

The menu has been updated, offering a larger variety of pizzas, including new favorites “the Banh Mi,” which features ground pork, house-made pickles, cilantro and Siracha, and “the Goat,” which comes with prosciutto, goat cheese, arugula and lemon oil. The drink menu has a new focus on high-end rum. The bar also gained a new beer tap system with four local brands on tap.

The music line-up has also been switched up – with more DJs in the mix and a broadened musical palette. DJ Sun performs on Fridays with DJ Melodic, offering fun music ranging from upbeat soul, funk, and house to Latin beats, Afro-beat, Haitian Zouk, and other international flavors served up during a night dubbed “Flight 1701.”

Now that the Flat is heading into its 10th year in business, DJ Sun hopes to continue to make improvements and enhance its offerings. “We want to provide the ultimate experience for someone looking for great music, the option to dance, a rum-inspired drink menu and high-quality, cutting edge small vineyard wine selection,” DJ Sun said. “You can walk in on any night and have the best time with our music offerings and drink selections, with top notch customer service in a comfortable setting.”
