PROVIDENCE, RI – July 30, 2014 – Travelers to Providence (www.goprovidence.com) can plan a “Creative Escape Weekend” from August 8 – 10 as the city will be abuzz with four marquee events displaying the city’s arts and cultural offerings. The weekend includes the Rhode Island International Film Festival, a full lighting of the WaterFire art installation, AS220’s annual Foo Fest celebration and Opera Providence performing The Mikado. Rhode Island International Film Festival: Tuesday, August 5 – Sunday, August 10
Perennially ranked as a one of the top film festivals in the United States, the six-day Rhode Island International Film Festival is the largest public film festival in New England and an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences qualifying event., this world-class event will feature 200+ screenings, filmmaking workshops, meet-and-greet industry events and seminars held at landmark Providence venues. WaterFire: Saturday, August 9 at Sunset (7:55 p.m.)
All 80+ bonfires of the internationally-acclaimed WaterFire art installation will be lit on August 9th, and will be accompanied by live music from local bands as well as performing artists located throughout Downtown Providence. For the first time since 2012, the WaterFire Ballroom at Turk’s Head Plaza in the Financial District will be available, featuring swing dancing from Roger Ceresi’s All Starz and Tony Cerbo.
WaterFire is celebrating its 20th season in 2014 and has been a signature event in The Creative Capital since its inception in 1994 by Brown University graduate Barnaby Evans. It has served as a key element in the city’s revitalization effort by drawing more than 15 million spectators throughout its history. Set along the city’s three downtown rivers, which come together at Waterplace Park, WaterFire creates a serene and multi-sensory experience marked by sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, flickering firelight on the city’s arched bridges, and the silhouettes of the fire tenders in torch-lit vessels passing by the flames. AS220 FooFest: August 9, 1:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.
Foo Fest, Providence’s biggest block party, features 12 hours of live music, art, performances, family-friendly activities, food and drink both inside and on Empire Street, just outside of the AS220 art studios. This year’s festival will feature 12 straight hours of music, headlined by PSYCHIC TV and also featuring 21 additional artists who will perform throughout the day. Visitors can partake in a Costume Factory Workshop hosted by the Providence Comics Consortium, a FOO Fest Parade, Advice Comics as well as interactive AS220 Industries Demos four artists booths AS220 is an artist-run organization committed to providing an unjuried and uncensored forum for the arts. Opera Providence: Special Performance of The Mikado
Friday August 8 & Saturday August 9 at 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 10 at 3:00 p.m.
Opera Providence presents a special performance of The Mikado at Providence’s Columbus Theatre during Creative Escape Weekend.
