Fremont County, WY - When the state of Wyoming was still Wyoming Territory, when the phonograph was just a year old, a total solar eclipse passed over this wild corner of the world. Thomas Edison attended the 1878 eclipse for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
On August 21, 2017, the galaxy will put on the same show for anyone who chooses to follow Edison’s example and experience the eclipse in the authentic West. The recently launched Wind River Eclipse website, windrivereclipse.org, details the reasons and ways to the best eclipse viewing to Wyoming’s Wind River Country/Fremont County.
Wind River Country will be the heart and soul of the Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017. This special piece of the universe has an unrivaled record for clear skies, panoramas that will take your breath away and cultural opportunities that will expand your worldview.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the new moon lines up exactly between the Earth and sun, appearing to completely block the sun. The moon is much smaller than the sun, but also closer to the Earth, so both appear in the sky to be about the same size. The process of an eclipse takes several hours, but totality—which is only visible on a narrow path across the U.S.A. and Wind River Country this time— is when the moon completely blocks the sun. During totality, day quickly darkens to a deep twilight, and the solar system puts on a show that shouldn’t be missed.
