Bläsersonatinen; Richard Strauss; Armonia Ensemble; Berlin Classics BC0300576; 1 CD
“Workshop works, to keep the right hand, freed from the baton, from dozing off too soon” is how Richard Strauss understatedly described his masterly output following his final 1942 opera Capriccio, including his two Sonatinas for 16 winds.
Members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra founded the Armonia Bläserensemble in 2000. The ensemble’s repertoire ranges from Trio d’Anches and classical wind quintets to Mozart, Dvorák and Richard Strauss.
Harmonies du soir; Eugene Ysaÿe; Liège Royal Philharmonic; Kantorow; Samouil; Lavrenov; Belaud; Giot; Quatuor Ardente; Musique en Wallonie MEW1472; 1 CD
In Harmonies du soir et autres poèmes for strings, the brilliant Belgian violin virtuoso and composer Eugène Ysaÿe (Liège, 1858-1931) created a totally new and original genre, far removed from the purely virtuosic merits of his early works. French conductor and Ysaÿe specialist,Jean-Jacques Kantorow leads the Liège Royal Philharmonic and soloists through five works for violin, cello, two violins or string quartet, all with orchestral accompaniment and a sixth for string orchestra. De la Salle plays Schumann; Robert Schumann; Lise de La Salle; Naïve V5364; 1 CD
“These three works offer a genuine journey, full of con-trasts, in which the listener can easily find wonder, surprise, and kaleidoscopic shifts from one emotion to another. I like it when you don’t ever settle into a com-fort zone. I’m looking for emotions – that’s what guides me. These pieces aren’t for children, but assume the character of innocence and candour that one finds in childhood. I’d even go so far as to say that they adopt the tone of late adolescence and early adulthood.” –Lise de la Salle
De la Salle chose the Abegg Variations op.1, Kinderszenen op.15 and the Fantasie in C major op.17 for her first recording dedicated to the German romantic master. A repertoire she says has a lot to reveal Schumann’s younger life. For more information about de la Salle, visit lisedelasalle.com.
