Starting from scratch: Food entrepreneurship offered online from Oregon State

Corvallis, Ore. - What is it like in the thriving food industry? According to Kristin Kolasinski of Whole Foods Market, “it’s creative, it’s innovative, it’s passionate, it’s really all about community and connecting with people. That’s really inspiring and amazing.”

This passion is the number one ingredient in many small food and specialty product ventures, but passion alone is not enough to sustain a successful business.

That’s where Oregon State University comes in. The Professional and Continuing Education unit developed their newest certificate to help aspiring food and specialty product entrepreneurs develop their passion and creativity into a successful business. The Recipe to Market Online certificate, beginning May 1, shares the heart, passion and culture of the food and specialty product industry and combines it with the mentorship and expertise burgeoning entrepreneurs need.

PACE utilized the expertise and cooperative nature of Oregon small food and specialty product businesses to provide participants in the online certificate with real-world advice and entrepreneurial experience. Featured businesses in the certificate include Ruby Jewel ice cream, Kombucha Wonder Drink, Portland Bee Balm, New Cascadia Traditional gluten free bakery, Wild Food Friends nut butter, Grandma Chonga’s Salsa, Choi’s Kimchi., Jacobsen Salt Co. and Seely Mint.

The three-course online certificate provides an entrepreneurial foundation for developing and launching successful food business ventures. Through lessons in start-up planning, food regulations, marketing and commercialization, these courses will teach students essential skills for navigating today’s food landscape. Each course in the certificate is $299 and Food writing, an elective course, will cost $250. Students will save $100 by signing up for all three courses in the certificate.
