With Two Rivers in town, Glenwood Springs Rafting Companies Are Going with the Flow

Glenwood Springs is home to two waterways, the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, providing rafters with plenty of paddling options during high runoff seasons like this one.

Snowmelt from the high country is making its presence known with high water levels in the state’s rivers. While big waves and fast water are a thrill-a-minute for some, most recreational rafters are looking for trips that offer whitewater excitement, but are manageable for everyone including those with little or no experience.

Glenwood Springs is one of the few places blessed with not one, but two rivers for rafting! That means when a portion of river is closed due to high water flows, like the Shoshone section in Glenwood Canyon, there are still plenty of options for half-day whitewater adventures.

Several rafting companies are choosing to put in at Grizzly Creek, located below the two-mile long Shoshone section in Glenwood Canyon and paddling to takeouts in New Castle. The 2-1/2 to 3-hour trip travels through spectacular Glenwood Canyon. This trip is chocked full of Class III whitewater interspersed with stretches of calm water.

Other companies are running trips from Carbondale though Glenwood Springs to New Castle on the Roaring Fork River. Bumpy Class II and III water keeps this trip fun and high-spirited. Among the highlights are spectacular views of Mt. Sopris and the opportunity to catch glimpses of the bald eagles that nest along the Roaring Fork. Like the Glenwood Canyon trip, plan 2-1/2 to 3 hours for this half-day outing.
