Judges Announced for Penguin Hotel Art Contest

HGTV’s Lindsay Pumpa, Art Writer Ciara LaVelle and Art Dealer Paul Fisher Join Judging Panel to Transform Hotel Rooms on South Beach

South Beach, Florida – January 2015 – The Penguin Hotel announced its judging panel for their art contest to transform the hotel rooms. The contest, which is accepting entries until January 30, 2015, is seeking for new art for the wall-sized canvas in each hotel room. Judges include HGTV Urban Oasis lead designer Lindsay Pumpa, art writer Ciara LaVelle, and art dealer Paul Fisher. Facebook fans will also get a chance to vote for their favorite images.             “With renovating the rooms, we wanted to get input from our guests, travelers and artists of all skill levels,” said Markus Friedli, owner of the Penguin Hotel, “There is so much talent in the world, we didn't just want to buy stock art for the rooms. We want art with a story.”

In addition to the chance to have their art on the walls of the historic Penguin Hotel, the contest offers the opportunity for artists to have their art seen by an impressive panel of art and interior design professionals. Judges include:  

Lindsay Pumpa – Interior Designer:  Lindsay Pumpa, the lead interior designer for HGTV’s Urban Oasis and owner of LPumpa Designs, is an expert at blending together unexpected design finishes and textures, while keeping a very contemporary aesthetic. Pumpa’s talents have earned her many clients and awards including the 2014 Best of HOUZZ recognition.

Paul Fisher – Art Dealer: Paul Fisher, who has worked with Dale Chihuly since the late 80’s, is an art dealer with two galleries. He is also the president and founder of Juried Art Services and has helped coordinate the selection of artists for numerous art events including the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, DC; the Philadelphia Museum of Art and more than 140 other events nationally and worldwide. He is based in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Ciara LaVelle – Arts Writer: Freelance writer Ciara Lavelle covers arts, culture and travel for media outlets including the Miami New Times, Bitch magazine, MIA Connections and VisitSouth. Her research and writing has taken her into the depths of Art Basel and Miami’s burgeoning art scene. Her travel writing career took her to more than 100 different hotel rooms around the world, giving her insight into what art works well in hotel spaces.

Facebook Fans of the Penguin Hotel: After judges pick 10 of their favorite entries, voting opens up to the world as the images will get posted onto Facebook for fans to vote for their favorite. Facebook voting will take place on February 3, 2015.

Titled The Big Picture, Interiors at The Penguin Hotel, the art contest offers all who enter a 10% discount on hotel stays plus a $10 bar credit. Winners receive $500 plus a two-night hotel stay. Artists can enter up to four digital images of their work (cost to enter: $20). After the competition closes on January 30, 2015, 10 finalists will be displayed on the Penguin Hotel’s Facebook page. Online public voting will take place February 3, 2015.
