Jax Fish House proclaims March as Oyster Month and celebrates with oyster eating competition; Grand prize takes home $1,000 in cash

900 free oysters in one day, giveaways, special oyster dishes, and charity support will also be part of the month-long celebration

Kansas City, Mo. (March 3, 2015) – Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar has proclaimed March Oyster Month and is celebrating throughout the month. The premier event is an oyster eating competition on Sunday, March 29 with a grand prize of $1,000 cash and free crab for a year. Guests will also have opportunities throughout the month to win prizes, dine on free oysters, and enjoy custom oyster dishes created by Executive Chef Sheila Lucero.

Oyster Eating Competition

Jax’s inaugural oyster eating competition will take place on Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m.. Teams of four will slurp it out during a 2-minute battle and the team that swallows the most oysters in that time will win $1,000 cash and free Jax crab for a year. The oyster eating competition entry fee is $400 and all proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In addition to the contest, Jax will feature drink specials throughout the day specially created by Kenny Cohrs, lead bartender.

Interested parties can enter by calling Jax at (816) 437-7940 and asking for Rick Compton or Margaret Adams. The last day to register is March 22 and the competition is limited 15 teams.

Let-It-Slide Contest

During the entire month of March, guests can enter for a chance to win $100 Jax gift cards by taking a photo of themselves sucking down their favorite oyster at Jax. To qualify, photos must be posted on Instagram with the #JaxOystergram hashtag and geo-tag Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar. One winner for the best photo and another for most photos will receive a $100 Jax gift card. The winners will be announced on April 1 via the Jax Instagram account.

Oyster Specials

Free Oyster Giveaway Day:

One day in March, Jax will give away half a dozen free oysters to the first 150 people through the door. The Free Oyster Giveaway Day will be announced the day before via the Jax Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JaxKansasCity.

Signature Specials:

Jax chefs have created signature specials inspired by global oyster-loving cultures. Each special will run for one week during oyster month.

  • March 1 – 7: Chef Eric Lee of Jax LoDo in Denver presents Oyster and Parsnip Stew with parsnip chips and olive oil
  • March 8 – 14: Chef Matt Lewis of Jax in Glendale, Colorado presents Fried Oyster Bao Buns with oyster sauce, pickled cucumber and sriracha mayo
  • March 15 – 21: Chef Ricky Myers of Jax in Fort Collins, Colorado presents Cornmeal Fried Oyster Po’ boy with braised collards, Andouille salsa and comeback sauce
  • March 22 – 28: Chef Alex Krill of Jax in Boulder, Colorado presents Cornmeal Fried Oysters with apple-fennel slaw and tarragon aioli

Jax KC’s Chef De Cuisine Bobby Bowman will also be doing his own featured specials throughout the month. Guests can find more information on these specials on social media.

National Oyster on the Half-Shell Day:

On March 31, Jax will feature expanded mignonette and granitee options, as well as many new oyster accoutrements in honor of National Oyster on the Half-Shell Day.

Dozen Dozens

Each time a guest orders a dozen oysters during March, they will be presented with a sweepstakes card to fill out. At the end of the month, Jax will draw from these sweepstakes cards and one winner will receive a dozen free oysters per month for a year. 

Charity

Ten cents of every oyster shucked during the month of March will be donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
