Fall is fleeting in Colorado, but September provides the perfect window for leaf-peeping. Travel and Leisure even named Glenwood Springs to its list of America’s Best Towns for Fall Colors. Try these nearby drives, and if time permits, why not stretch your legs a bit.
1. Glenwood Canyon. A gorgeous drive during any season. Aspen are sparse in the lower sections of the canyon, but look for their golden halo near the cliff tops. The dense and prolific scrub oak that grows wild throughout Glenwood Canyon adds an autumn glow to the canyon walls.
Hike/Walk. The rest areas in Glenwood Canyon provide easy access to trails. Walk a section of the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path at No Name; meander along the streamside trail at Grizzly Creek; for a rigorous hike, choose Hanging Lake.
2. Four Mile Park. Head toward Sunlight Mountain Resort, but take the car-friendly dirt road to Four Mile Park. During fall, the groves are swathed in every shade of yellow.
Hike/Walk. Stroll on the dirt roads or through the open meadows. This is a perfect place to listen to the sound of “quaking” aspen leaves as the wind sifts through the pale-barked trees.
3. Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus. This drive is all about the view. Vistas from campus reveal Mt. Sopris and the Elk Range to the south where the soft autumnal colors of the landscape blend together.
Hike/Walk. Just stroll around one of Colorado’s most spectacular college campuses and enjoy the breathtaking views.
