AUGUST 1, 2016, Corpus Christi, TX — Save the date for the 20th Annual Corpus Christi Heart Walk which has been set for Saturday, October 1, 2016, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Whataburger Field. Each year, several thousand volunteers and participants gather to raise awareness and funds that fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers respectively. The non-competitive 5K walk is open to all age groups and also includes Hands-Only CPR training, kid zone area, team photos, and much more. All activities are free and open to the public; participants who choose to fund raise are eligible for prizes.Money raised from the Heart Walk funds cardiovascular research and education. The American Heart Association currently funds more than $29 million in research in Texas.
Heart disease and stroke are responsible for approximately 1,130 deaths a year in the Corpus Christi area, making it the leading cause of death and an issue that hits home for many. But the good news is that these diseases are largely preventable through a healthy diet and physical activity. Research has shown walking to be the single most effective form of exercise to achieve ideal cardiovascular health and just 30 minutes a day can improve critical numbers like weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing your risk for heart disease and stroke.
The Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by Subway and locally presented by AEP Texas. Major support from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Corpus Christi IceRays, and H-E-B. Sponsored by Andrews Distributing, Atlas Tubular LLC, B-C Equipment, BMW of Corpus Christi, Braselton Homes, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, Corpus Christi Medical Center, Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, Driscoll Children’s Hospital, The Grainger Foundation, Gulf Coast Federal Credit Union, Hicks Family of Dealerships, Jessica Kelly State Farm Insurance, KIII-TV, Mattress Firm, MAX Underground Construction, Mike Shaw Automotive Group, Navy Army Community Credit Union, Physicians PremiER, Post Acute Medical Specialty Hospital, Radiology & Imaging of South Texas, River City Hospice, Sames Ford, Security Service Federal Credit Union, SSC Services for Education, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University–Kingsville, TLC Complete Care, and Wells Fargo.
