Australia’s only national event returns, now in double digits
A decade after first hitting Australian shores, Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge is calling out for participants to help break the world record for the longest line of giant Havaianas inflatables in open water.
The tradition began on Coogee beach on Australia Day 2006, when 863 people rode hot pink giant thongs into a new world record for the longest line of inflatables in open water - eclipsing the record set by Germany in 2003 of 753 people.
Now entering its 10th year, the event has grown from one beach to five across Australia – North Bondi (NSW), Torquay (VIC), Glenelg (SA), Mooloolaba (QLD) and Cottesloe (WA) – and has raised more than $330,000 for local SLSC Nippers programs.
Each beach will compete to beat the challenge’s reigning champion, Cottesloe Beach, where in 2014 a record 2,099 people connected in water on giant Havaianas inflatables. Cottesloe is a tough competitor, having won for the past three consecutive years.
In 2015, celebrations at each of the five events will include celebrity ambassadors and a full day of beach activities for all ages including beach games with prizes to be won, DJs, and more.
Online registration is $30, which includes a $10 donation to SLSC Nippers Programme and a 2015 giant Havaianas inflatable (valued at $49.95).
As there will be a limited number of registrations available on the day, pre-registration is recommended to avoid disappointment.
