The Making of Houston Makerspace ~ Creative Workspace Launches in EADO/East End Houston April 2014.

Officially opening its doors to the public on April 12, 2014, the ever evolving and growing Houston artistic community will get a collaborative Makerspace East of Downtown with Houston Makerspace's inaugural launch. Houston Makerspace, a 21,000 square ft (+) artist warehouse located in EADO/East End Houston, is a artist atelier where creatives gather to make art/designs and share knowledge and resources while defining their business brands via a makerspace membership. Inside of the Houston Makerspace warehouse artists have access to the following: jewelry studio, wood shop, metal shop, cut/sew/textiles shop, rapid prototyping lab( that includes access to laser cutter and 3D printing) and a letterpress shop. In addition to these tool-to-production studios, the Makerspace will offer co-working space, rentable office studios, an iMac/PC computer lab, photo product room and classroom/conference space. Houston Makerspace also offers workshops and classes to the general public ranging in a variety of design-production and business topics. The outside interiors of HMS include 10,000 square feet of green space sponsored by Edible Earths Resources. Houston Makerspace founder Maclean Smyth stated that her reasoning for opening a Makerspace in Houston was "The access to these business building blocks in an environment such as HMS allows the artist creative thoughts to become fabricated, conceptualized, tested and incubated while fostering economic empowerment via the affordable membership program."

Creative business brands already hanging their office hats at HMS include By Claire Webb Jewelry Designs, PR agencyFrom A_to_B: The Creative Consultancy and 501(c) 3 fashion non-profit Magpies & Peacocks who also serves as Houston Makerspace sustainability mentor and charity of choice.
