Weights and Measures Restaurant, Bake Shop and Bar to Open Fall 2014 in Midtown Houston

HOUSTON, TEXAS – September 18, 2014 – Born from a long-standing friendship of four like-minded Houstonians, Ian Rosenberg and Mike Sammons (13 celsius and Mongoose versus Cobra), Richard Kaplan (River Café and Brown Paper Chocolates) and Heath Wendell (Slow Dough Bread Co.) will open Weights and Measures, a casual Midtown restaurant, bakery and bar in a 1950s industrial warehouse at 2808 Caroline Street. Weights and Measures will be a combined space greater than the sum of its parts, offering a comfortable, welcoming, neighborhood feel. Scheduled to open in phases beginning fall 2014, the bar will open first, soon to be followed by the bakery and restaurant.

“We see tremendous opportunity as Houston continues to evolve,” says Rosenberg. “Weights and Measures is reminiscent of some of the most comfortable places we’ve ever been, from a slower, simpler time. We’re creating an environment that inspires our customers to slow down a little bit and enjoy every moment.”

Throughout history, “weights and measures” was the name given to government-sponsored agencies that worked to ensure vendors were selling exactly what they were advertising. Customers buying a pound of grain wanted to be sure they were getting exactly what they paid for–a full and proper pound of grain. Customers thirsty for a pint of ale wanted to be sure they were paying for a full pint of ale. It’s this kind of assurance of quantity and quality–with reformulated classics and reinvigorated recipes–that Weights and Measures hopes to pass on to its customers.

The full bar, Love and Squalor, named after a J.D. Salinger short story, will foster an identity that emerges and expands as evening progresses. Love and Squalor’s bar program will feature hundreds of bottled beers, an affordable, smart and succinct wine list focused on small producers and family-operated vineyards, and an ever-changing list of dynamic cocktails including the classics as well as new riffs inspired by a nod to the cocktail culture of the ’70s and beyond. A late-night food menu, offering a slightly abbreviated, more casual take on the restaurant menu, will also include pressed sandwiches, pizzas, bar bites and items befitting later hours. As a cozy extension of the neighborhood’s living room, Love and Squalor will further the human connection, the most important part of the bar experience.

Serving as Slow Dough Bread Co.’s first retail component, the Slow Dough Bake Shop at Weights and Measures will open daily for breakfast with freshly-baked breads, pastries and donuts and a locally-roasted coffee program curated by Amaya Roasting Company. Kaplan's Brown Paper Chocolates, known for skillfully-conceived combinations of nuts, fruits, liqueurs and herbs, will also be sold in the Bake Shop and incorporated into many of its products and desserts.

The Weights and Measures restaurant component will be casual, comfortable and straightforward with an emphasis on fresh-baked bread and well-crafted food. Counter service will be available for quick, seasonal lunches. Full-service dining throughout the evening will offer satisfying and unique dinners. Wood-burning ovens preside over the kitchen and will prepare everything from Napolitano-style pizzas to wood-fired proteins and vegetables.

The food complex and eatery will occupy nearly 5,000 square feet of the industrial warehouse at 2808 Caroline, equidistant from 13 celsius and Mongoose versus Cobra. The large living-room-style 150-seat restaurant is accented with decor reminiscent of childhood memories. Nostalgic, vintage touches like fabric sofas and shag carpeting soften the industrial feel of the building, and windows along Caroline Street give passersby a glimpse inside. About Weights and Measures
Slated to open this fall in Midtown, Weights and Measures is a 5,000-square-foot casual neighborhood restaurant, bakery and bar located in a 1950s industrial warehouse at 2808 Caroline Street. The project is the result of a long-standing partnership among four like-minded Houston locals: a developer, a bartender, a chef and a baker. The ultimate goal is to create a comfortable, sincere and welcoming place for Houstonians to dine, relax, socialize and share great experiences. Mornings will offer daily baked breads and pastries as well as locally-roasted Amaya coffee and freshly squeezed juices from the bakery. For lunch and dinner, the kitchen will deliver a seasonal, quintessentially American menu (not committed to any one cuisine culture) with an emphasis on wood-fired meats and vegetables, bread-centric plates to share and various styles of pizza from a wood-burning oven. A full bar will operate throughout the evening, hosting a huge stable of bottled craft beers, an affordable wine list clearly obsessed with small production, and a large variety of spirits and cocktails.
