Hattie Larlham Announces New Session of the Green Scene

Hattie Larlham’s Green Scene community club for young adults between the ages of 9 and 14 on the autism spectrum will start its eight-week winter/spring session on Friday, January 24. The club meets every other Friday from 6-8 p.m. Meetings will be held at the Constant Companions at 1402 Boettler Road in Green, Ohio. The cost for the program will be $25 per meeting. All young adults from Green and surrounding areas are welcome to join.

The Green Scene helps young adults on the autism spectrum build social skills through hands-on learning activities. The goal is to create a safe, welcoming and fun environment where participants can build friendships as well as gain confidence and self-esteem. Program activities led by experienced Hattie Larlham staff will focus on the specific interest of participants. Past activities have included Wii tournaments, listening to and playing music, crafts and a tower construction challenge.

“Young adults with autism have an especially difficult time during the transition from elementary school to middle school and from middle school to high school,” said Julie Lowe, Director of Community Programming at Hattie Larlham. “They see other students participating in extracurricular activities, forming friendships and spending time with each other outside of the classroom. Students with autism may want that too and Hattie Larlham’s community clubs provide them with a safe, accepting environment to build those connections with others.”

To register for the program, call Ashley Robinson, Coordinator of Community Programming at Hattie Larlham at 330.274.2272, ext. 3166. For a full schedule of dates, visit http://www.hattielarlham.org/v/play-autism-community-clubs.asp.
