Houston, TX - August 2, 2016 -- The plans for El Gato Coffeehouse, Houston’s first and only cat-themed cafe and adoption center, are officially out of the bag. Founder Renee Reed is bringing the altrustic concept to an Inner Loop location in early 2017, offering patrons a purrfect place to enjoy freshly roasted coffees and pastries while relaxing with adorably adoptable cats. To celebrate the launch of the El Gato Coffeehouse concept, Reed is hosting a Pop-Up Party co-hosted with the Houston Humane Society on Sunday, August 14 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Sharespace. Live music, sips, bites, art and fabulous, adoptable felines will be part of the evening’s amewsment.
El Gato Coffeehouse plans to accomplish the mission of finding furrever homes for adoptable cats by offering los gatos a more enriched life outside of the shelters and off of the streets where they will receive regular interaction from humans increasing their chances of adoption. Reed and her boyfriend, longtime Houston resident, musician and feline enthusiast, Joshua Cormier, are partnered with Houston Humane Society to fulfill their vision.
Gin Braverman of award-winning design firm gindesignsgroup has dreamt the purrfect environment to bring "catification" to life. Behind El Gato’s ornate Gaudi-style doors, a wonderful world awaits, combining the highly imaginative style of the Spanish architect with modern, Japanese-influenced and mid-century furnishings, mixed with a heavy dose of natural elements.
Upon entering, a variety of seating options on the cafe side allows guests to lounge comfortably in quirky tufted armchairs or chat with friends at mod tables. Glass wall mosaics and forest murals transport guests into a magical world, far removed from the city outside.
On the cat-lounge side of things, a fantasy tree provides a focal point for "cativities," whether it be strutting along the catwalk overhead, climbing the wall ledges scattered around the perimeter, lounging in the sun-filled window niches or sleeping in their private castle quarters. The lounge will accommodate 15 to 20 cats at a time, and for a small fee, guests can play and interact with the cats. Because El Gato Coffeehouse is a haven for adoptable cats, no outside animals are allowed.
Reed’s menu includes a full coffee bar featuring specialty drinks, teas and coffees sourced directly from Argus Coffee Co., a local, small-batch roaster and Fat Cat Creamery ice cream. El Gato's signature " El AffoGato" coffee drink is made with espresso and Fat Cat Creamery ice cream. The menu also includes savory snacks such as empanadas and sweet desserts from Jodycakes. Patrons have the option to enjoy food and beverages in the cafe or in the cat-world beyond the large glass viewing window.
Reed is also stocking the shelves with cat-inspired clothing, art, books and accessories that will be available for purchase as well as a carefully curated selection of accessories for cats themselves.
