Fountain Valley, CA; September 9, 2014: Festival Ballet Theatre, one of Southern California's most vibrant and accomplished ballet companies, kicks off the season with the company premiere of Emmy Award-winning choreographer Robert Sund's Alice in Wonderland. Known for his innovative style and musicality, Sund has set Lewis Carroll’s classic tale to a selection of Jean Sibelius' lyrical melodies. This colorful and whimsical production is a heart-racing adventure down the Rabbit Hole, into Wonderland Garden, through the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, where audiences will see all their favorite Alice characters - from the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedledee & Tweedledum, to the infamous Queen of Hearts. Adorned with whimsical sets, wildly realistic masks and colorful costumes, the adventures of the wildly curious Alice provide a spectacular fantasy experience for both children and adults alike.

This sumptuous program of dance also includes:

Mixed Repertoire: An eclectic program of three short pieces provides a diverse blend of contemporary ballets created by choreographic masterminds.

Serenade was created by George Balanchine on Tchaikovsky's 1880 Serenade for Strings in C, Op. 48. Students of the School of American Ballet gave the first performance of this ballet in 1934. It was the first ballet that Balanchine choreographed in America.

Valse-Fantaisie was presented in 1967 with music by Mikhail Glinka, also for New York City Ballet. The music, roughly contemporaneous with the waltzes of Frederic Chopin, is fast and light, although it was more popularly called “the Melancholy Waltz,” according to the Balanchine Trust.

Convergence - a world of colliding opposites, was created for Festival Ballet by internationally acclaimed choreographer Josie Walsh. Known for her unique and progressive approach to ballet, Walsh fuses modern movement with a strong classical base. Frequently collaborating with her artist/husband Jealous Angel, Convergence features a remixed song by Zoe Keating.
