Also Appears Alongside James Jagger in Upcoming Indie Drama ‘7x7’
LOS ANGELES (July 15, 2016) – Actor JAMES CHEN tests traditional beliefs starring in the cross-cultural, gay-themed dramatic comedy, FRONT COVER. This highly-acclaimed film is winding up its world-wide festival tour at LA Outfest on July 14th and the New York Asian American Film Festival on July 29th, followed by a much-anticipated theatrical release in select U.S. cities, including New York on August 5th, with Hong Kong and Taiwan coming soon.
FRONT COVER follows Ryan (Jake Choi), a gay Chinese-American fashion stylist who despises his ethnic heritage. When he’s assigned to style the patriotic Beijing celebrity Qi Xiao Ning (Chen), egos and opinions clash leading to a rocky start. As the two men discover similarities, a friendship and attraction develops leading each to examine their individual beliefs and identities.
The film comes from writer-director Ray Yeung (Cut Sleeve Boys) and co-stars actress Li Jun Li (Minority Report, Quantico) as Ning’s girlfriend and veteran actress Elizabeth Sung (The Night Shift, Elementary) as Ryan’s mother.
Chen was thrilled to collaborate with writer-director Yeung, explaining “This was arguably my most creatively satisfying role to date. I loved being able to collaborate with someone who has lived with these characters for as long as Ray (Yeung) has. He knows them so well, but was also open to input from the actors in rehearsal and on set. This inspired a confidence that just allowed me to trust and, to a degree, want to live up to who the person, Ning, is. Also, I was deeply impressed at how adeptly he wove the worlds of New York City and fashion, as well as Chinese and gay culture together. I think it's a real testament to his writing and what gives the film such a strong foundation.”
Up next, fans will get the chance to catch Chen back on the festival circuit in the indie drama, 7x7, opposite James Jagger (Vinyl). The film follows a brilliant but troubled tech entrepreneur, Carson (Jagger), who finds his professional and personal life turned upside down after he’s implicated in a serious accident. Chen steps in as Carson’s business partner, Hayden, a dedicated co-founder of their high-profile tech company, handling much of the mounting pressure and responsibilities pulling at Carson’s startup world.
Audiences will remember Chen from his two seasons as CSU Detective Adrian Sung on NBC’s long-running police drama, Law & Order: SVU. He is also recognized for his recent appearance as Kal on the wildly popular AMC series, The Walking Dead; and guest-starring roles on FOX’s Sleepy Hollow and CBS’s Person of Interest among many other notable roles. On the big screen, Chen has appeared alongside numerous A-listers, such as Kate Winslet, Jim Carey and Tilda Swinton in international studio films including The Amazing Spiderman, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Labor Day, and We Need To Talk About Kevin. Originally from upstate New York, Chen earned his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in Acting at Yale School of Drama, where he was awarded the Dexter Wood Luke Memorial Prize.
Currently as a writer/filmmaker, Chen has also been hitting the festival circuit with his latest short film, The Swap, which has already screened at the Kingston Film Festival and the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival.
James Chen is represented by Nicolosi & Company (New York) and Velocity Entertainment Partners.
