When the ninth annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF) commences today in Istanbul, Turkey, Portland-based World Pulse, a network of tens of thousands of women and allies in more than 190 countries, has an opportunity to accelerate digital inclusion for women worldwide.
Drawing from hundreds of testimonials collected from grassroots women leaders who participated in the organization’s most powerful campaign yet, WWW: Women Weave the Web, World Pulse this week presents recommendations, models and best practices on women’s digital inclusion and empowerment in a flash session. The session intends to generate a discussion with key technology companies, international organizations and governments on how to improve efforts to support women’s full engagement in the information society and transform their recommendations into actionable plans and policies.
The IGF is a multi-stakeholder, democratic and transparent forum, which this week hosts more than 2,500 participants representing governments, inter-governmental organizations, the private sector, technical community and civil society to examine cross-border Internet governance. World Pulse connects grassroots women leaders around the world through an Internet platform in order to accelerate the changes they seek by uniting their voices and channeling their solutions to key conferences and organizations worldwide.
“Our WWW: Women Weave the Web campaign ignited the participation of World Pulse community members from over 70 countries, concluding with a record number of nearly 600 submissions,” says Leana Mayzlina, Digital Campaigns Manager for World Pulse and a speaker at the forum. “We’ll use this crowd-sourced data to generate a conversation with key stakeholders on how women’s digital inclusion can be accelerated and prioritized to digitally empower women around the world.”
Two additional speakers are World Pulse network members Iffat Rose Gill, Founder of Chunri Choupaal and Tiffany Coulson, MLIS Graduate Candidate, University of Washington.
The main goals of the World Pulse crowd-sourcing initiative were two-fold: first, to gather the wisdom of grassroots women internationally on how to overcome barriers to increase digital access and empowerment in their communities; and second, to equip decision-makers at the top with this information from the ground about how they can better serve, include and engage women around the world. By appearing at the IGF, World Pulse inserts the powerful collective voice of an international network of women into the brainstorming, development and strategizing process for all players in the technology ecosystem.
Twitter hosts workshop to hear findings of World Pulse Campaign
Later this month World Pulse will again present the preliminary findings of the Women Weave the Web Campaign at an exclusive workshop for leaders in the technology industry at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, hosted by Super Women at Twitter and campaign partner Business for Social Responsibility. World Pulse executives and members have also been invited to speak at key forums like the Clinton Global Initiative and the UN Foundation-sponsored Social Good Summit among numerous others.
