Easter in Lanzarote

The other day, a couple of friends asked to me what is the best accommodation to enjoy a getaway to Lanzarote during this Easter.  My lovely island offers so many possibilities, but it is true that choosing a haven of rest is a very important decision, especially if you will stay only 4 days.

In this case, bearing in mind it is a short stay, I recommended to them to give in to the whim and opt for top class hotels (4-5 stars).  Hotels and villas in Lanzarote are still at a really affordable price in this time of the year and, additionally, are free of that characteristic crowds of the main tourist areas of the island.

Hotels in Teguise coast are the most recommended ones, since, besides their good price-quality relation, they stand out for being the most complete hotels of the island: authentic beach resorts to escape and enjoy a total disconnection from reality.

Playa Blanca or Arrecife are also good options, especially if you want to take the opportunity to discover some emblematic corners of Lanzarote and go out at night.  However, moving across the island by car is very easy and comfortable, and the car rental offer is so good that you can get a small car at good price.

Here are some of the plans for couples that I suggested, in case you are interested:

  1. Wine tour: All the tours begin in the famous Monument to the farmer created by César Manrique, artist from Lanzarote.  There are several wine cellars in its surroundings: Mozaga, Fajardo, Tinache, El Grifo… It is worth tasting some of their malmseys to appreciate the difference between one wine or another.
  2. A visit to Cueva de los Verdes: Penetrating into one of the longest tunnels of the world, this is the experience hidden behind this visit.  The cave is placed in La Corona volcano and has an underwater tunnel.  All the environment is just amazing.
  3. The fire mountains: This is the other name of the Timanfaya National Park.  Although it is very touristic and has routes which do not allow improvisation  or a free discovering, it is a must visit in Lanzarote, both if you go with your partner, friends or children.
  4. Excursion to Playa Quemada: It is a hiking excursion by Lanzarote, very simple, ideal for beginners.  It is a good option for enjoying a different beach and sport day.  The marked route goes by Playa Quemada, Playa del Pozo and Playa de la Casita, but there are dozens of interesting excursions to do, some of them in a group and with an interpretive guide.

The route going across Pinares de Cartaya, in the Huelva province, is one of the most famous for its excellent orography for extreme sports.  Scene of numerous competitions, as the recently celebrated XIII Marathon BTT, it offers spectacular spots which represents an unique added value for those who come to this area of Costa de la Luz looking for nature and sport holidays.

Pinares de Cartaya is an area of 29,600 acres where is placed the forest heritage of this municipality in the Huelva coast, mainly based on a Mediterranean forest where you can find the stone pine,  phoenicean Juniper, and the characteristic large-fruited Juniper, as well as examples of the Canary Island pine, holm oak, cork tree and bracken.

The reservoir of the Piedras river, views of the beautiful Flecha de El Rompido, reservoir of Los Machos, Arroyo Gordo, Las Madamas or Alto del Madroño are some of the places that you can enjoy by this natural route.  Here you will contemplate a very diverse landscape, with stony paths winding up among the marshes and the native vegetation which is in all its splendour these spring months.

Some hotels in Punta Umbría, such as Barceló Punta Umbría Mar, offer the possibility of booking directly with companies ofguided tours in quad bike or bicycle by this area of the marshes of the Piedras river. You can take part in the tours during the whole year, if you want to drive the quad bike, bear in mind that your driving license is required.

If you book a hotel in El Rompido, you can also go by the opposite route, visiting the marshes of the Odiel river and the natural reserve of La laguna de Portil, another treasure of this amazing area of the Huelva coast.
