Karl Schroeder of Safeway Inc. named as Corporate Honoree for the California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour presented by Amgen

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 18, 2014) – The Arthritis Foundation, Pacific Region, today announced that Karl Schroeder, President of Safeway’s Northern California Division, will serve as Corporate Honoree of the 14th annual California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour (CCC), presented by Amgen. Approximately 250 cyclists will ride from September 13-20 and raise $1.1 million for the Arthritis Foundation.

This year, Schroeder will lead Team Safeway on this boutique ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. He states, “I am excited and honored to be participating with this great cause, and to represent the more than 28,000 Safeway employees who battle this disability every day.”   As in previous years, Safeway volunteers will cheer on the cyclists and provide food and beverages at rest stops during the breathtaking 525-mile course along iconic Highway One.

“We are thrilled to welcome Karl Schroeder as our 2014 Corporate Honoree,” said Manny Loya, CEO of the Arthritis Foundation, Pacific Region.  “We are grateful for Safeway’s generous support of our mission to improve the lives and find a cure for nearly 53 million  adults and 300,000 children with arthritis.  Karl’s leadership of the Safeway partnership will help ensure that this year’s ride is a great success.”

Schroeder leads the efforts of nearly 270 Safeway stores in California, Nevada, and Hawaii. As a group, these stores rank among the largest grocery chains in the country. Schroeder joined Safeway as a courtesy clerk in the Phoenix Division in 1976 and quickly moved up the ranks, earning his first store manager position in 1982.  He served as district manager  throughout Northern California and Hawaii prior to becoming Vice President, Retail Operations for the Northern California Division.  Schroeder was named Northern California Division President in 2004.

Schroeder has three sons and lives in Walnut Creek, Calif., with his wife, Aurelia. He is an avid runner and cyclist and has participated in several endurance races throughout the region.
