Three student athletes training at the ELEV|8 Sports Institute have signed letters of commitments to play at the college level and all will be receiving scholarships to cover costs of their higher education.
“With commitments in hand, these three student athletes can now shift their focus onto preparing for college, both academically and in their respective sports,” said Luis Alicea, executive director of baseball at the Delray Beach, FL based Elev|8 Sports Institute. “We expect to see several more of our seniors receiving scholarships in the next few months.”
The Elev|8 athletes signing letters of commitment with NCAA Division 1 schools were baseball players Michael Brenner, a senior at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, FL; and Justin Walker, a senior at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL. Both will attend St. Louis University.
Basketball standout Derrick (D.J.) Clayton, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, who also signed a letter of commitment and is receiving a scholarship, will be playing at Western Kentucky University.
“D.J. is a prime example of a kid that has unlimited potential,” says Cody Toppert, director of basketball operations at the Elev|8 Sports Institute. “He's got tremendous athleticism and explosiveness going to the basket, and in addition to that, he's got a great ability to shoot the ball.”
Originally from California, Clayton transferred to ELEV|8 Sports Institute, a residential academic and sports training program, for his senior year to take advantage of the high level of training and competition.
Brenner, a centerfielder, has been training with the top-notch coaches at Elev|8 for the past two years and has also continued to play with the South Florida Bandits travel team..
A leader on and off the field, Brenner recruited a handful of other teammates to work with him on several Habitat for Humanity projects in South Florida.
“What was just a dream eight years ago finally became a reality,” he said of signing with St. Louis University. “It just goes to show that with hard work and perseverance anything is possible. I am excited to begin the next chapter of my baseball career and in life.”
Walker, a student in the prestigious International Baccalaureate program at Suncoast High School, is a right-handed hitting third baseman, who has been training at ELEV|8 for the past year, following several years of high school baseball.
Walker, who has spends summers volunteering, mentoring and umpiring at a youth baseball program run by his father, says he believes he has benefited greatly from the quality of coaching he received at Elev|8, in addition to the leadership skills he says will be important in the future.
“All three of these athletes are proof positive that our program can change lives,” Alicea says. “The values these young men have embraced, from teamwork to dedication, not only make them better athletes but also helps them become better people.”
