A blockbuster exhibit that uses the magical fun of LEGO® pieces to connect visitors with the wonders of the natural world will make its outdoor debut at Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden™, starting May 2.
Nature Connects 2 builds on the popularity of New York artist Sean Kenney’s original LEGO® art exhibit, which appeared at Powell Gardens in 2013. The 2015 show includes 27 sculptures made from more than 300,000 LEGO® bricks. The sculptures are set in 14 scenes, each depicting connections in nature.
From squirrels taking on Indigo Buntings at the bird feeder to a majestic Bald Eagle perching at the lakeside, the exhibit’s 25 new sculptures showcase the complex and amazing network that interconnects all living things. Two sculptures—a giant hummingbird and a delicate moth orchid—make a return appearance from the 2013 show.
The exhibit, which is included with regular Garden admission, opens Saturday, May 2, and continues through Monday, Sept. 7. Special programming includes weekend discovery stations, a hands-on LEGO® building station, a LEGO® Building Challenge, appearances by LEGO® Master Builders, a performance by The Paul Mesner Puppets and more.
LEGO Brick Donation Drive
LEGO enthusiasts will come together to share their creativity and give back to the community during Nature Connects 2 opening weekend festivities on May 2-3.
Powell Gardens will sponsor a LEGO brick drive for The Giving Brick, a local nonprofit that collects, sorts and repackages used LEGO into kits for abused and neglected children. Visitors may bring any unwanted LEGO pieces to Powell Gardens and be entered for a chance to win a great LEGO-related prize.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 2 and 3, visitors can meet The Giving Brick representatives at their interactive community building station, where they can learn more about the organization's work and make a LEGO-brick creation to add to the group's display community.
Throughout the summer, anyone who makes a donation at any of The Giving Brick's regular collection points (see the list at http://www.thegivingbrick.org/partners.html) will receive a buy-one, get-one free coupon to Nature Connects 2 at Powell Gardens. Donations also will be accepted at the Gardens throughout the exhibit.
Kansas City Brick Lab
Opening weekend also includes MOCs (My Own Creation) by local LEGO building enthusiasts and a chance to learn building tips from members of this Kansas City-based group.
