MIPS AB and Bell Helmets launches the first street helmet with MIPS Inside

Bring high-end technology to the masses. Bell's Qualifier DLX with MIPS will be available in Fall 2016, introducing also the MX-9, MX-9 Adventure with MIPS

The helmet industry has in the latest years redefined the way to think about angled impacts causing rotational energy and strain in the brain. Bell Helmets, one of the industry’s most iconic brands and a leader in innovative head protection, has teamed up with MIPS and introduces the first street motorbike helmet in the market with MIPS inside. True to their philosophy of bringing high tech to the masses, Bell launches the MIPS Brain Protection System in one of their bestselling street helmets, the Qualifier DLX, and also in the popular motocross helmets MX-9 and MX-9 Adventure, showing that safety is a priority not only for the premium segment.

“It’s our belief that high tech doesn’t have to equate to high price, and we’re demonstrating that by bringing MIPS Brain Protection System to these helmets,” says Chris Sackett, Vice President of Bell Helmets. “We have led the charge for safety technology for 60 years, and our mission continues to be one of providing high-quality safety features to riders at every level.”

Expanding to a new segment of helmets is a challenge for MIPS but one that has been planned and prepared thoroughly in every detail. “We focus on how to make helmets safer and specifically on how to reduce rotational energies from angled impacts, which is known to cause strain in the brain. Our team of researchers are constantly looking for new segments to incorporate MIPS”, says Peter Halldin, CTO and co-founder at MIPS.

MIPS Brain Protection System

MIPS mimics the function of the cerebral spinal fluid in the human head and adds a second layer of protection. MIPS uses a low-friction layer that, at the point of an angled impact, creates a relative motion between the helmet and the head. This helps to redirect the rotational energies away from the brain and to lower the strain in the brain tissue during the first critical milliseconds of an impact.

The MIPS low friction layer is custom made to the helmet and takes account for all types of technical features as well as ventilation.
