Boca Raton, Florida
The National Society of Arts and Letters- Florida East Coast Chapter, announced the winners of the 2014 Musical Theatre Competition. It was held on Saturday March 8, at the AG Concert Hall at Lynn University in Boca Raton. Thirty young singers performed Broadway songs in the hope of winning one of the cash awards being presented for this competition. Taking first place was Khalifa White, 2nd place, Nicolelette Sweeney, and 3rd place, Kayla Fainer. For her efforts, White took home the $2,000 top prize. The other two cash prizes were for $1,000 and $750. The winners will also get to participate in a Master Class led by Broadway Star Avery Sommers as well as the opportunity to perform on March 27 at the Red Rose Gala, the NSAL Florida East Coast Chapter's annual signature scholarship dinner.
White, a student at University of Central Florida, song "Home," from "The Wiz," and "Waiting For Life," from "Once On This Island." She said she plans to use the prize money to assist with school and purchase a car. "Unlike science and math students, it is very hard for people pursuing the arts to get scholarships, so I am happy that NSAL is one of the few organizations in the area that still give and care about people pursuing the arts," she said. The UCF student is currently performing in Hair Spray at the Garden Theatre and plans to perform at the Orlando Fringe Festival in May.
The National Society of Arts and Letters Florida East Coast Chapter is a non-profit student arts advocacy & scholarship organization. Among its famous alumni are Megan Hilty of Smash and Gelan Lambert of Fela!. The Chapter President is Theatre Director Shari Upbin.
