Riverton, WY - It has been four years of blood, sweat and tears for a local couple that had a dream of bringing a community based veterans support program to Fremont County. That dream is about to become a reality.
Charlie and Jennifer Wilson of Lander are within days of the grand opening of The Soldiers House of Fremont County and they could not be more pleased. The opening and ribbon cutting for Soldiers House of Fremont County will be on Veterans Day, November 11, 2 – 5 PM with Ribbon Cutting at 3 PM, 1201 East Jackson, Riverton.
The idea of The Soldiers House began when the couple agreed to start a chapter of The Soldiers Project in Wyoming. The Soldiers Project (www.solidersproject.org) is a non-profit organization that links post 9/11 veterans and their families with local, volunteer, licensed psychotherapists to provide free, unlimited, and completely confidential services .
After speaking to several colleagues who were interested in volunteering but did not have the office space to do so, the Wilsons started looking into office space in Riverton. At the same time, the old Schmitt farmhouse in North Riverton was slated for demolition and Charlie saw an opportunity. The house was moved to the corner of the old Riverton hospital lot and construction began.
Three years and thousands of hours of volunteer labor later, a beautifully restored, welcoming farmhouse awaits the arrival of veterans and their loved ones seeking support before, during and after deployment.
The Wilsons are currently using the space as the headquarters of The Soldiers Project – Wyoming Chapter, but they have many other programs in the works, and they are actively asking the community to become involved in providing services for those who have served.
