The Mixx Announces Opening of First Kansas Location in Hawthorne Plaza As Center Expands and Undergoes Multi-Million Dollar Renovation

Concept Responds to Customer Requests for a Healthy Quick-Casual Option in Johnson County and Joins Recent Announcement of Container Store Opening

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 8, 2014) — Jo Marie Scaglia, owner of the The Mixx, announced plans to open the first Kansas location for the quick-casual, fresh and healthy custom salad and sandwich concept in the Overland Park, Kan., Hawthorne Plaza Shopping Center, located on the southwest corner of 119th and Roe. The Mixx anticipates a December 2014 opening for its third location. Scaglia is designing the new Mixx location for the community and all-ages as a moderately-priced, healthy, fresh and quick-casual concept in a 4,300 square foot space formerly occupied by the Westchase Grill.

The Mixx offers customers the ability to create custom salads with more than 50 mixx-ins to choose from as well as its signature gourmet salads. Build-your-own and interesting sandwiches as well as creative soups, fresh pastas and wraps are also served at The Mixx. Every item is prepared from the freshest ingredients at the time it is ordered. The Mixx caters to every taste, accommodating vegetarian and vegan diets as well as gluten or dietary allergies, in addition to the traditional flavorful fare, enhanced by the fresh ingredients. The new location will add a fresh press juice and espresso coffee drink bar that will also continue to serve sweet indulgences with cookies, cupcakes and macaroons. The Mixx will also serve a selection of beers, wines and vodka lemonades.

The multi-million dollar renovation married with the addition of a Container Store and other local or unique retail destinations solidified Scaglia’s decision to open her third location and the first location in Kansas. Since opening her first location in the Plaza Colonnade in 2005 and her second in the Power & Light District, Scaglia consistently received requests to open a Johnson County location. The fresh plans for Hawthorne Plaza solidified Scaglia’s decision for the new location of her fresh, quick-casual restaurant.

Scaglia worked closely with David Hickman, senior vice president, and Lindy Meyer, associate, with CBRE, Inc. as leasing agents for Hawthorne Plaza. “The Mixx has long been on the bucket list of dream retail additions for Hawthorne Plaza that we are thrilled is joining the center during this amazing time of transformation,” said Hickman.

The Mixx partners with other local companies to bring fresh options to the table, including bread from Farm to Market Bread, Central Soy Tofu, coffee from the Roasterie and Boulevard Brewery to offer the finest local beer.
