Need a fresh start? A new perspective? Why not a whole new year?
The Arapaho tribe on the Wind River Indian Reservation recently celebrated its new year with a sun dance, a very special event to the tribe. Now they invite the public to celebrate the new year with them at the Ethete Celebration, their annual Indian Powwow, this Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24, 2016.
Sunny Goggles, one of the powwow organizers, said not only is the public welcome, but also encouraged to attend the event in Ethete, WY.
“It gives them some exposure to Native culture and tradition, all in just one weekend,” she said.
Powwows are festive Native American gatherings that keep Native culture alive and bring communities together. Join over 500 dancers from all over the country, tribes from across North America and residents from all corners of Wind River Country/Fremont County for this powwow.
The grand entry and warm up evening starts Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m., followed by a Royalty Contest. On Friday, Grand entry begins at 7 p.m. On Saturday, grand entry begins at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday will have a final grand entry at 1 p.m., followed by a feast at 5 p.m. Get more information about the powwow by calling Goggles at (307) 851-3386 or Colette Friday at (307) 460-8560.
“I grew up in Ethete and I love that all the community comes together,” said Googles of the Ethete Powwow Celebration.
Watch the numerous stunning dance competitions, get lost in the drum circles’ music, sample the spread from Native American food vendors, and take home a hand-beaded souvenir to remind you of the new start you got to take on the year.
