RAGTRADE Atlanta Receives Phoenix Award at First Annual Runway Weekend

RAGTRADE ATLANTA RECEIVES PHOENIX AWARD AT INAUGURAL RUNWAY WEEKEND

Emerging Designers Larika Page, Milo Beloved, Edmond Newton, Natt Taylor and Anna Toth debut spring/summer 2015 collections

Atlanta, GA – Aug. 25, 2014 – The first-ever RAGTRADE Atlanta Runway Show premiered Saturday Aug. 23, 2014 at the W Atlanta – Buckhead with a full day of runway shows featuring Spring/Summer 2015 collections from the Southeast’s top emerging designers and a special preview of the Bauder College Senior Juried Collection.

The event kicked-off with the Bauder College Black Tie Next Runway Show with a variety of artistic collections from students including Curtis Carter, Brittany Sanders, Tamara Cook, Crystal Paris, Lydia Houston, Lealer Ann, Violet Douthit, Ryan Coleman, Tim Scott and Randy Gary. After an impressive showing, a jury of Bauder College faculty and influencers awarded three (3) designers for their success in three selected categories. The winners included:

·       Lawanda Scales – 2014 Industry Portfolio Award

·       Lydia Houston – 2014 Craftsmanship Award

·       Tim Scott – 2014 Best BBT Award

The most anticipated event of the day, the RAGTRADE Atlanta Emerging Designer Show took place later that evening and featured five (5) of the Southeast’s top emerging talent. The following designers were hand-selected based on years of experience and design aesthetic. Designers featured included:

·       Larika Page, 2010 Charleston Fashion Week “Emerging Designer Competition” Winner

·       Milo Beloved of Harold & MOD, 2014 Birmingham Fashion Week Emerging Designer

·       Edmond Newton, NBC’s “Fashion Star” Contestant

·       Natt Taylor, American womenswear fashion designer and local Atlanta favorite

·       Anna Toth, 2014 Charleston Fashion Week “Emerging Designer Competition” and “People’s Choice” Winner

Larkia Page opened the show with a collection she self-titled “Sidewalk Surfing” which was largely inspired by her son and his love for skateboarding (he even opened her show on his skateboard!). As a designer, Page is known to create designs that are both fluid, and structured. Her abilities showed throughout her collection and spoke to her skateboard inspiration. Page kept her color palette simple with a mix of soft pinks, blues, nudes and a bold yellow.

Milo Beloved, designer of Harold & MOD, took to the runway next. Beloved, who specializes in re-purposing discarded materials and pushing the envelope, put on a crowd-pleasing show that went beyond the garments and incorporated a variety of re-purposed props such as shopping carts, curtain rods and more. For Spring/Summer 2015, Beloved utilized lace and intimate-inspired materials throughout his designs. This allowed for a cohesive, yet versatile collection that incorporated everything from casual wear to formalwear.

Designer Edmond Newton showed next with a special capsule collection dedicated to and inspired by his mother. Newton, who is known for his drama and balance, played with a variety of materials, textures and prints in his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Although he began as a menswear designer (and continues to design menswear today), each silhouette from this collection spoke to Newton’s appreciation and understanding of the female form.

After a brief intermission, womenswear designer, Natt Taylor took the runway with a collection she self-titled “Safari Elegance.” Taylor’s design aesthetic speaks to the professional woman and her garments aim for an easy transition from day to evening. Her Spring/Summer 2015 collection highlighted sophisticated yet sassy designs and incorporated her signature use of bold colors, prints and subtle details.

The fifth and final designer, Anna Toth, took the runway for the finale show. Toth, who specializes in garments made from primarily US materials such as cottons and denim, keeps her design aesthetic polished and unique. For Spring/Summer 2015, Toth kept things clean, yet funky. The overall collection was fresh and youthful with playful silhouettes such as jumpers and mix-and-match pieces. Toth used gold grommets as her main source of embellishment across several pieces and kept to a classic blue, chambray and white color palate.

Following the emerging designer show, the RAGTRADE Atlanta committee members received the coveted ‘Phoenix Award’ on behalf of Mayor Kasim Reed and the City of Atlanta.
