Actress JOY JACOBSON Delves into Civil War Era on Anticipated Remake of Historic Miniseries ‘ROOTS’

LOS ANGELES (May 25, 2016) -- Actress JOY JACOBSON delves into the Civil War era on “Night 4” of the highly-anticipated remake of the miniseries, ROOTS, scheduled to air on June 2nd. This historic revival will be simulcast over four consecutive nights on A&E, History Channel and Lifetime beginning Memorial Day, May 30th.

ROOTS delivers a multi-generational exploration of author Alex Haley’s family tree that traversed more than a century of the African American experience, from the colonial-era slave trade through Reconstruction. Jacobson joins the story as ‘Charlotte Murray’, who with her husband and son, own the North Carolina plantation on which Kunte Kinte’s (Malachi Kirby) descendants end up prior to the Civil War.

A lover of history and period dramas, Jacobson was thrilled at the opportunity to work with director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) and alongside the talented cast, including Anna Paquin, Erika Tazel and Mekhi Phifer. Jacobson adds, “We were filming on an actual plantation and immersed ourselves in everything that happened here over the past two centuries. It was impossible not to be emotionally absorbed by this world or to feel the immense significance of this story. I was so honored to be part of this beautiful and historic retelling, which is as much needed today as it was nearly 40 years ago.”

Originally from North Carolina, Jacobson is recognized for her numerous TV and film appearances, including The Longest Ride, Dr. Ken, The Muppets, Sleepy Hollow, Partners and The Middle to name a few. However, she is no stranger to period pieces, emerging in theaters across the country in such classics as Twelfth Night, Way of the World, The Seagull and An Ideal Husband. Jacobson graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and received her MFA from CalArts.

In between pursuing her degrees, Jacobson lived for a year in India, where she helped communities in need. On more than one occasion, she had the opportunity to meditate with the Dalai Lama himself. When not acting, Jacobson is busy mothering her highly spirited five-year-old twins.

Joy Jacobson is represented by STW Talent, Aqua Talent and Cohen Entertainment.
