$790,000 Contract Creates Opportunities for Childcare Professionals

Platteville, WI January 27, 2015-- The Office of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin Platteville recently earned a service contract of $790,000 to provide access to credit-based instruction for child care providers across the state of Wisconsin. The service contract is funded through the Federal Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” initiative, coordinated through the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF). UW-Platteville was among six institutions statewide to be awarded service contracts, and the only institution working with providers in all six DCF regions.

According to Marian Maciej-Hiner, Director of Continuing Education at UW-Platteville, her organization will use the DCF funding to provide scholarships for a minimum of 225 child care professionals to participate in synchronous online courses and achieve state-approved credentials. The scholarships are available to providers who work at centers with limited financial resources and a 2- or 3-star rating, as determined by the DCF’s Youngstar program.

“The funds from DCF allowed us to create scholarships to cover all expenses for the credential courses, including a full support network of instructors, OCE staff, and career counseling through the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association,” Hiner said. “This means individuals who didn’t have the resources previously can access the materials at no cost and will have the ability to take their careers to the next level. Perhaps more importantly, they will have the proper training to ensure the safety and well-being of Wisconsin children for years to come.”

Participants may choose between four credentials: Infant and Toddler, Preschool, Family Child Care, and Afterschool & Youth Development. The Infant and Toddler credential is available in Spanish and can be translated into Hmong and Somali upon request.
