15 April 2014 - Concert - Album launch by The Gypsy Swing Project 'Paris-Dubai'

The Gypsy Swing Project launch their first album at the Alliance Française on April 15.

A quirky cover that renders the ‘jazz manouche’ spirit, a disc filled with French classic songs that you won’t stop humming, this is “Paris-Dubai”, the first album of The Gypsy Swing Project. The Dubai-based band has graced many stages in the UAE as ambassador of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz music.  In the pure spirit of Jazz Manouche, the band has delivered a truly enjoyable album with renditions of Edith Piaf, Georges Brassens and of course, Django Reinhardt. 

Album recorded at SoundStruck studios in Dubai, produced by KMAC & KG productions.

The concert is free; just RSVP is mandatory. Album will be on sale.

5 April 2014 - Painting Exhibition by Mahsa Naghibzadeh, Iran - 'Yearning For Freedom'

Dubai resident Mahsa Naghibzadeh, from Iran, will hold her first Dubai exhibition at Alliance Francaise Dubai.

The collection represents the artist’s reflexion through the last 6 years of freedom in its multiple faces. The artist will display them all in one exhibition called yearning of freedom, highlighting the dream of a brighter future, an  horizon of equality in the world.

Exhibition runs until May 1st.

7 April 2014 - Cinema Under The Stars - French movie with English subtitles

Movie Title: J'enrage de son absence - French movie with William Hurt

Synopsis: Touched to the depths of his being by the death of his child in a car accident nine years earlier, Jacques has lost his bearings. For this loss is all the more difficult to stand as Jacques was driving the car in which his son was killed. His relationship did not survive the tragedy and Jacques left, traveling far from the place where his and his wife's happiness was shattered. Now Jacques is back in France for the funeral of his father. In the meantime his wife has started a new life and has a new child.

2 and 3 April 2014 - Theatre - "Moulins a paroles" - Show performed in French language

What: Theatre production "Moulins a paroles" Alan Bennett by Compagnie l'Oiseau tonnerre. "Talking Heads" Allan Bennett by The Thunderbird Theatre".

Synopsis: Three English women talk endlessly about their lives. It's funny, pathetic and engaging. Irene spends her time to spy on neighbours and write letters of denunciation. Suzan, woman of an Anglican priest, neglects to maintain her position within the stifling atmosphere of the parish. Leslie, failed actress, runs from castings to shootings, all disastrous. Between comedy and drama, these stories of the ordinary madness explore the border between dreaming about one's life and really living it. 

The Thunderbird Theatre has performed many shows of both classic and contemporary repertoire in France and in the Middle -East.

5 April - Spelling Bee competition in French language

Try your knowledge and spelling skills in French with this fun competition organised by French publishing house 'Les Editions de l'Opportun' in partnership with 'Les Timbres de l'Orthographe'. The competition is held in all Alliance Francaise around the world. 

The competition is open to fluent French language students and advanced level from the age of 8 years old.

The test lasts 1:30 and consists of a dictation and a few questions.

Prize is a one-week trip to Paris.

A show based on improvisation and interactive works.
