Phoenicia Specialty Foods’ YUMMY! Wonderland Celebrates Global Holiday Customs, Cuisines

Family-Friendly International Festival Welcomes Santa Claus, Operation Stocking Stuffer

HOUSTON, TEXAS November 2015 — Walking through a Winter Wonderland is nice, but brunching, crafting, shopping and singing through a YUMMY! Wonderland is oh, so much better. Phoenicia Specialty Foods is doing just that, hosting the YUMMY! Wonderland International Holiday Festival & Brunch with Santa, Saturday, December 12, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Phoenicia’s Downtown location, 1001 Austin St., Houston, TX 77010. The celebration brings the best global holiday traditions under one festive roof for a party that’s full of merriment and joy for the entire family.

Like the diverse and delicious offerings at Phoenicia, the YUMMY! Wonderland Festival highlights the cuisine and customs of multiple countries and regions including the United States, Mexico, Latin America, Russia and the Ukraine. Talento Bilingüe de Houston will host a performance, as will the Russian Cultural Center and Ukrainian National Women's League of America and children from the Ukranian school. The performances will showcase holiday music and dancing from their respective countries.

Theatre Under the Stars’ Humphreys School of Musical Theater students will sing Christmas carols, as will students from Awty International School’s international choir singing in English, French and Spanish. KINETIC, a fresh, new conductorless orchestra comprised of 16 string players led by Natalie Lin will perform “Around the World.” Lin hails from New Zealand, and not only teaches violin, but is also pursuing doctoral studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

FLY Dance Company always adds a jolt of energy to every event and the dynamic dance team will give guests a preview of their holiday Jingle FLY show. The Houston Rockets will join in the fun with giveaways and games with a possible guest appearance by their mascot Clutch.

In addition to experiencing live performances, families can create memories together at hands-on craft centers including a flip book craft from Aurora Picture Show and cookie decorating. Houston Makerspace will host a Young Makers activity station for making embossed holiday cards. And, because all children want to tell Santa Claus what’s on their wish list, Santa will make an appearance, speaking with children in French, Spanish and English. Photo opportunities will be available.

The festival also features holiday shopping opportunities from local artists and The Community Cloth, a local organization selling artisanal hand-crafted products locally made by women who come from all corners of the world and now make Houston their home. On view along Phoenicia's storefront windows will be holiday scenes by students from Glassell School of Art.

Phoenicia is celebrating the generosity of the season and its commitment to the community as an official sponsor of the Houston Fire Department’s (HFD) Operation Stocking Stuffer. Guests who bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the campaign will receive a complimentary hot chocolate.

The YUMMY! Wonderland buffet brunch is a mix of delicious global dishes that are served during the holidays, including:

  • Pomegranate Glazed Salmon

  • Assorted Quiche

  • Moroccan Bastilla

  • Aleppo Roasted Potatoes

  • Falafel Spiced Hash Browns

  • Waffles with Cranberry Syrup

YUMMY! Wonderland is free and open to the public. All-you-can-eat brunch tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children (ages 4-12). Brunch, coffee and juice will be served from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and are included in the ticket price.

Offering food lovers more than 15,000 products from over 50 countries at down-to-earth prices, Phoenicia Specialty Foods is Houston’s premier family-owned, one-stop, gourmet international food market--and a dream that started modestly. In 1983, Bob and Arpi Tcholakian, Lebanese immigrants of Armenian descent, opened Arpi’s Deli, a Mediterranean-style delicatessen in West Houston. By 1992, the Tcholakians were renting additional space to store their many imported goods. Retail and wholesale customers were soon visiting the storage space to purchase a case of desired, hard-to-find specialty items, and eventually this grocery section became a specialty foods market. Phoenicia Specialty Foods has grown significantly by being responsive to loyal customers and maintaining its focus on offering a wide variety of unique, quality international brands not available elsewhere. More than a grocery, Phoenicia Specialty Foods is an experience. International shoppers and food enthusiasts alike enjoy fresh-baked artisan breads, award-winning European pastries, boutique wines and beers, quality meats and cheeses, a fresh seafood department, hot grill items, tasty prepared foods, exotic produce and a fine assortment of housewares. In 2011, Phoenicia Specialty Foods expanded with the opening of its downtown location and MKT BAR. Located within Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown, the urban chic MKT BAR offers gourmet appetizers, select wines, tasty beers on tap, a unique gelato selection and a wide variety of coffees and teas from around the world. Within walking distance to many attractions downtown, MKT BAR is a perfect place to enjoy before or after a game, a concert or a performance. For more information, visit
