“Caravelle has been a landmark for the past 50 years,” stated Sid Kalmans, of Hotel Caravelle, “With these incredible renovations, an amazing team and a great community, we are looking forward to another incredible 50 years of welcoming guests to St. Croix.”
Renovations were made in all guest rooms and in the public spaces including the lobby, front desk, pool area, as well as with the exterior and structure of the historic hotel. All 42 guestrooms feature new furnishings including beds, mattresses, pillows, linens, art, windows, lighting, flooring, paint and amenities.
“Special enhancements were integral in the redesign of the hotel,” stated architect Steve Myrvang. While he focused on the structural portion of the hotel, his interior designer wife Josie focused on the details from plantings and paint colors to amenities and art. The local culture is showcased with works by Don Diddams. His digital photography is featured in the lobby and in guest rooms. The ceiling of the lobby features a flowing colorful print by local textile artist Debbie Sun.
“Everyone expects art on the walls, but when they see it on the ceiling, it is both surprising an thrilling,” said Josie Myrvang, “Because the lobby is open, Debbie’s ceiling piece flows with the breeze. It is the perfect expression of Caravelle’s character – creative, unique and friendly.” Sun’s creations are featured in guest rooms, where the crisp cotton linens are complimented with a bed sash and accent pillows, and in the casino. The overall color scheme of the hotels interiors is natural, calming and subtle with bright accents. The exterior of the hotel is a bright yellow, to pay a special nod to the other historic buildings in Christiansted, which are also yellow.
