WYOMING OUTDOOR COUNCIL

Founded in 1967 by Lander resident Tom Bell

How does the Wyoming Outdoor Council (WOC) serve Lander?
The Wyoming Outdoor Council is Wyoming’s oldest independent statewide conservation group. WOC is recognized throughout the state—by policymakers, agency staff, the media, and citizens—as an organization with a long record of credible, science-based environmental advocacy. Recently, the Wyoming Outdoor Council’s sustained advocacy on the Shoshone National Forest plan helped result in an 84 percent decrease in lands near Lander deemed suitable for oil and gas surface disturbance. The draft plan left critical lands at risk for development, including the entire Lander Front, the Beaver Creek Nordic ski area, and the Wild Iris climbing areas. WOC’s advocacy significantly shaped the final plan and helped ensure that some of Lander’s favorite places to recreate are safeguarded for the enjoyment of all.

How will your Challenge for Charities donation to the Wyoming Outdoor Council make a difference in Lander this year?
WOC’s mission is to protect Wyoming’s environment and quality of life for future generations.   Funds donated will be used to support advocacy efforts that safeguard open spaces, cultural and historical resources, crucial wildlife habitats, and recreation on public lands near Lander.

What else?
Over the last decade Wyoming has become the second-largest producer of energy in the United States. There is no question that energy development is important, but its burgeoning footprint on Wyoming threatens our environment and quality of life. Without balance, the short-term economic benefits of the boom will be overshadowed by the loss of our incomparable open spaces, clean air and water, and world-renowned wildlife. Since 1967, the Wyoming Outdoor Council has worked to ensure that energy development is planned and regulated more carefully, and that our natural resources and environment are protected for current and future generations.
