The Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona (www.GLAAZ.org) recently held commencement exercises for 33 graduating seniors. This is the first class to attend the only all-girls public high school in Arizona all four years. Each of the 33 graduates has been accepted to college and the majority have received numerous scholarship offers. In fact, more than $200,000 in scholarships has been offered to the exemplary young women to continue their education.
All 33 students plan to develop additional skills and create ongoing opportunities for their academic and personal futures. Several of the students are the first in their family to graduate and are now setting an example for younger classmates and siblings. Additionally, the majority of the seniors took Advanced Placement (A.P.) classes that are accepted as college credit.
The young women will pursue a variety of careers ranging from biomedical engineering to middle school teacher and marine biologist at colleges including Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Simmons College in Boston and University of California at Santa Cruz.
In just four years of operation, GLAAZ has already created positive change in the community by preparing young women for success in future educational pursuits and in life. Its curriculum and many community partnerships facilitate learning beyond the classroom and provide numerous leadership, creative thinking and career exploration opportunities. Graduation is not only a milestone for the graduates themselves, but also for the dedicated faculty and staff who deliver the highest level of instruction and promote creative problem solving and confidence in each young woman.
