Paracosm Takes Home $50k From CAT5 Awards Competition

GAINESVILLE, FL–JUNE 9, 2014—Gainesville’s 3D tech startup, Paracosm, competed alongside 10 Florida companies at this year’s CAT5 Awards Competition in Orlando, FL.

CAT5 Awards is a capital acceleration competition for early stage companies funded by Space Florida and the University of Central Florida’s Office of Research & Commercialization which celebrates powerful, disruptive product developments.

The judging criteria is based on seven things: commercial potential, funding potential, competitiveness, execution, commitment and resources, technology progress, scale up potential and whether the company can thrive in the Southeastern region of the US from local business/resources.

As part of the competition, finalists participated in an intense mentoring program to prepare for the final showcase event. Andrea Wesser, Associate Director of the UCF Venture Accelerator, coached Amir Rubin of Paracosm on his final pitch. “In a nutshell, Amir delivered a flawless pitch, showed a viable, strong business model, and did so with visually stunning slides, which is why Paracosm was up there in the top 2,” said Wesser of Rubin’s presentation.

While Paracosm’s 3D modeling technology has various applications, from providing spatial intelligence for robots to using 3D models for remodeling projects, they narrowed their pitch to focus on the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) industry’s use for their product. MEP engineers can save time, money, and avoid expensive mistakes using Paracosm’s 3D scanning tools.

Gannon Wilder of Paracosm’s Business Development team, was present for the CAT5 Awards showcase. “We were really impressed by the scale of event. It’s exciting for the startup community in Florida to have competitions like this. The prizes are an incredible resource for startups and even if you don’t win, it’s a great experience to learn from” said Wilder. “We are grateful to UCF and the UCF Venture Accelerator for putting on this event and for sharing Andrea Wesser with us. The entire Paracosm team is thrilled to receive this prize!” he continued.
